    Hi,

I have a pioneer head unit with the direct sub option. Does anyone know how this works with a passive sub. The idea is that you dont need to run an amp. The sub out connection on the head is rca but the connection to the sub is standard speaker terminal.

Not too sure i understand what your saying but you cant go out an rca to a passive sub, you need an amp somewhere along the line.
The direct sub out then is powered your saying?

The idea is that you don`t need an amp. This might explain it better.

I just can`t figure out how it works. The sub out on the head unit is RCA and the input on the sub is Standard speaker connection.

Are you putting a home cinema passive woofer in your car?

    amplified filtered subwoofer

it needs an amplified sub. most head units go out to a sub amp, then onto the sub. so this one goes to a powered (active) sub. your sub is passive and you can either stick a low pass filter on your regular speaker connections and use it that way or else get a separate amp just for the sub
