copy of passport requested

I've applied for a job in the uk and the recruiter has emailed back looking for a copy if my passport.

This seems a bit dodgy to me. Has anyone else come across this before?

Probably just checking that you are entitled to work in the EU - i.e don't need a work permit or visa etc.

If you have done your homework on the company and it seems genuine, I'd be ok about sending a copy. You can edit out all the sensitive info (DOB, Passport Number, etc...) and just leave in your name and photo, which is the only info they should require.

You are right to be cautious, a lot of scammers are taking advantage of people who are under pressure to find jobs and feel they have to give a potential employer lots of personal information.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Id agree - would approach with caution - make sure the person works in the agency, so call them and check them out online. It can be standard practice, but in fairness if you've spoken to them it should be obvious!

This is because of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996, Google for more info. It is not a legal requirement to have a copy of your passport, although they may claim it is, but they need to be able to prove to the Govt. that they performed proper checks and that's the easiest way.

A lot of big recruiters use Sarbannes Oxley regulations and their system won't place people unless they have scanned id. It's nothing to worry about and standard operating procedure for a lot of places.
