Toshiba Equium u400-124 not holding charge

My sister has the above named laptop and its about 13 months old. The battery has suddenly stopped holding its charge and it will only run when plugged into the mains. Sometimes it says battery not detected and sometimes it says not charging......any ideas?

The battery is most likely dead. I think it's time for a new one tbh, some laptops just have woeful batteries these days. All Lithium Ion batteries have a limited life span, and this life is usually measured in the number of recharge cycles, i think on average you should expect 500 or so.
