guys, any idea why a 1 hour programme takes up 7% some times? or why 1/2 hour takes up 4%, then I delete, but only 'get back' 2%??? is there a way to upgrade Sky+ boxes or is there much point?
Any ideas how much a Sky + Hd box would set me back - do I have to pay a monthly fee also?
I currenlty have Sky+, with Sports, and then in another room, Sky plus sports
    thanks for the help.

I'm presume when you delete on Sky+ it doesn't actually delete (like a computer HD) i.e. The firmware just sees the empty space but the program exists until you overwrite it. Or perhaps on a reboot/long standby it formats the space where the program used be. I could be wrong however.

You can up the HD space in the Sky+ box. You need a fairly select hard drive but I've heard of 500GB being placed in the OEM white box. It does void your warranty however.

Sky HighDef is rather expensive at the minute for such a limited selection, mainly sports and documentaries. Personally, I would wait 2 to 5 years for HighDef to become more mainstream.

The space a programme takes up depends on the bit-rate of the channel; high quality streams - such as RTE, and Sky Sports for example - use far more space than low quality ones.

If you delete something that claims to take 1%, you may appear to get nothing back, as it possibly is the case that it was actually a fraction of 1%, and the total bar doesn't do fractions.

If you delete 4% and only get back 3%, it would be for the same reason.

Sometimes however, the space does get lost.

You can usually get this back by rebuilding the planner in the installer menu. This is non-destructive and won't mess with your recordings. If that doesn't work, a complete rebuild will delete all recordings and free up all of the possible space.

I recently found a way that you can defragment the hard drive of the Sky+ box, much like a computer it clears extra space on the box, hope this helps:

Enter the "Services" menu, quickly press 4,0,1 select on the remote control, this should bring you to the "Installer Setup" menu, then select option 7 "Sky+ Planner Rebuild", this will take a few minutes to defragment the box's hard drive.

I was looking for that for this thread earlier and do you think I could find it? There is another option, called a Hard Reset, but that completely wipes the box and formats the drive. It may also force a software update. Extreme but sometimes has to be done.

Same process, but you go for option 8 "Full System Reset" instead of 7.
