just wondering......Anyone i've talked to about golf balls, nearly all rave about the Titleist Pro V1, NTX etc. as the best ball on the market. Now i know they are a great ball but is there any other good types out there or does titleist have the market covered when it comes to good balls?

I used to mainly use the ProV1x recently...
Decided to try a few sleeves of other brands to see what's what recently. I like the TaylorMade Black tp ball... I used to used the previous red taylormade ball but found them not durable enough but I think the tp black is a fine ball now.
I also tried a Nike tour ball and had 5 birdies with it in my first round :) ... also it went OOB so no it's not magic.. damn :(
Played a srixon on my last time out for 3 birdies and 1 OOB....

To be honest I didn't see too much to differ from any of these but my current leaning is towards the TP Black.

I think the most important thing in to get the type of ball right, ie. Hard or soft ball etc. After that the actual brand won't matter too much, imo.

    Thats what i was thinking.

now for a stupid newbie question.......how do you know which ones are hard of soft?

I'm currently playing with wilson balls and can control them reasonable enough but wouldn't mind trying out some others.

Some people will stick their teeth into them to check but I'm not a fan of teeth marks on my balls...
The softer balls will be marked 'higher spinning' or 'tour' etc.
Much preferable for putting with, certainly better for chipping with but with better 'control' comes a downside. Because they will spin more, they will exaggerate your slice/hook too.
The 'harder' balls will go straighter and longer but will have less 'feel' and might go out the back of the green the odd time... then again, most amateurs miss short anyway?

Good ball Licksey, I must say I have a leaning towards the red, just feel more comfortable around the greens with them and I am not losing anything noticeable off tee.

Another beginner here... do golf balls really make that much of a difference?

yupp, a lot - even to a beginner.

While i'm not a total novice i'm no expert either but my kids got me a box of spalding balls for fathers day this year and jeasus its like hitting rocks off a tee!! (didn't tell the poor kids this - we use them playing around in the garden) I know the difference between some different brands and when chipping to a green i can almost stop a ball dead on landing.

I have to say i like the srixon soft feel ball. I get great distance from it and its a lot easier to chip with compared to some of the rocks that are about. I have also tried pinnacle fx long but wasn't fussed on them.

got a few srixon "soft feel" balls from e-bay there last week, tried them on wednesday and had a great game with them. Used them again yesterday and had a nightmare but it was me & not the balls that was the problem!!

What's the story with the new 5 layer Penta balls from taylormade? When are they out?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭Dylan69

I have gone through lots of type ranging from nike to srixon to taylormade. But now i can safetly say that i have found a ball that is forgiving is distance and have little spin. The Titleist NXT extreme balls have work wonders for me!!!:)

Any winter links golfers recommend a particular ball that works for them or do ye stick to the same ball in the cold conditions? Particularly interested in links golf here... playing the Taylormade TP Black at the moment and don't see much reason to change.

I think the Srixon Z Star is a very good ball and I find it better than the Titleist Pro V1's. It gives the same control and spin as the Titleist around the greens but I find it easier to putt with as its doesn't feel as soft and light as the Titlesit Pro V1.

Before I stopped playing 9 years ago the Maxfli Revolution ball was my fave.
Now that Im back playing its the Pro V1 but Ive not tried many other brands.
Am I missing out on much?

Have played with the Pro V's for a few years now but recently got a present of a couple of dozen Callaway Tour iX. Nice ball too. Some say they go farther than the Pro V's but I don't think so. if anything I reckon the Pro V has a few yards on the Callaway. Both great around the greens. I'll continue with the Callaway until I run out and am thinking of swithching to them altogether

I played a callaway diablo ball at the weekend. Really soft feel & great distance. Might buy a box for xmas. Anyone else played them?

    Wilson Staff PX3 Soft Spin

Lads and lassies have used PROV1 and the X version for years.
The above are much betters in my humble opinion and are about 15 quid sterling on line in the uk.

They are out in March 2010 Myksyk. I think the Taylormade Tour Players (eg Garcia, Goosen etc.) are already using them.

I just picked up 2 dozen brand new Titleist Tour Distance SF balls over here in the U.S. in CostCo for $29.99. They have the same external design as the ProV's (except Tour Distance is written on the arrow instead of Pro V). Has anyone played with these before?

They are supposed to be a 'distance' ball but they feel softer than your average distance ball. Looking forward to giving them a go when I get home. Seems like a good ball and good value too for any Titleist ball.

Got 3 Callaway Gloves for $18.99 too. God Bless America.

Thats a very good strategy IMO, the NXT Tour is a very underrated ball, esp in winter, while the Pro V is the gold standard for serious golf in the summer.

I think all the major manufacturers' good balls won't be a million miles away from each other in terms of performance, just down to personal preference really....

Probably about $50 a ball, when you consider his flights out an back, although I assume he's doing other things than just buying golf balls :D.

I'm fairlysure normanbond that jabber is in the states atm, or just back.
