The different Physical Appearance of the different Classes

Something that I've always wondered is how you can tell with a lot of people whether they were brought up in a working class lifestyle or middle to upper class.

I've often been refused from a night club with 1 or 2 friends because it's clear as day that we're from a working class area. We just look that little bit rougher and we could all be wearing slacks and shirt, clean shaving and a good head of hair.

Robbie Keane - I could tell instantly that he was from a working class area:

Shane Byrne is probably the 1 rugby player who I'd expect a big strong accent from but he doesn't so you don't get them all right.

It's not in the genes because we'd be the only family of my cousins brought up in a working class area and it shows in the face. I can't even pin point what's different which is part of the reason I'm opening this thread.

Interesting thread and something I have always thought about regarding chavs and skangers. Why is it that in Ireland anyway, they just all have that 'look'?

I am not talking about the clothes or the swagger or mannerisms, just the actual
physical look in the facial department? They all have it and you could dress them up anyway you want, the face just has that rough and scowly' look...

I don't think it's so easy to differentiate just by looks alone.

It depend more on clothing and manner, imo.

Though if someone is really rough looking you'd assume they're from a poorer background, sometimes you'd be wrong however

I can only speak for Limerick tinkers, but I think its the cheekbones that set them apart and give them the "look". Maybe im wrong about what gives them the look, but even the 2 year old babies in prams sometimes have it and its hilarious!

Of course people from the same classes look similar. People usually end up marrying others fom the same class. Its kind of inbreeding.

You know, this is one avenue I have checked out. Usually, skangers do go out with and do marry other skangers, the same with the "upper" class marrying and sticking to other "upper" class folks.

Like, it's a look from the young right thru to the old. You can spot it a mile off.
I cannot get my head around it, but it has to be evolution and genes and hereditary.

Even the gorgeous Cheryl Cole cannot completely hide that chav look.

Shows you how bad my memory is if that's the case. What brought it up was someone asking if you could tell what part of Dublin someone was from by the accent. I find it very easy to differenciate between working class and middle/upper class by their look. I work in offices. We all have dress smart. But I can still guess pretty accurately who's going to have strong or common accent.

Someone mentioned the cheekbones. I think Jamie Carragher actually looks very Irish and a few people have agreed with me on that.

In my school most of the scumbags were sallow skinned and tanned easily. BTW they were from settled community, well their families had been settled for at least a couple of generations.

Alan Brogan (Dublin GAA) has the sort of look I'm talking about. BTW I'm not saying that he is a skanger.

I read before that some people in NI claim they can tell if someone is Protestant or Catholic just by looking at them.

Yes well done OP, and furthermore, I would like an explanation why people of a certain class always have an attraction to hoopy earings, shoddy sportswear and cans of Carling, while another class of people only wear polo shirts and drink pints of Heino?

Maybe these are concious decisions to remove oneself from associations with an opposing class of people? Like rastafarians or goths.

Maybe people also conciously mate only with people of similar class levels. Hence the "Robbie Keane factor" as I believe it should called henceforth.

It's an obscure technical term I know but I believe it applies in this case.

I don't know if some of you actually read my post or you're just doing anything to sound funny. My mother is from a middle class background. We were brought up in the inner city. If you saw me you wouldn't expect a posh accent to come from my mouth. It's pretty obvious that I'm from a working class background and I can't believe so many people on this thread actually think it's not that easy to tell.

Another valid point and possible explanation. It's for a multitude of reasons, but simply look at the face and remove everything else, and you can almost always spot a skanger.
The weathered and rough and hardened features. It's fascinating really.

It really is nice to know that there are still vacuous and superficial people out there actually judging you on the way you look.

I am a metalhead. I wear combats and rock tee shirts as do most of my friends (just to propagate the stereotype!).

Most people would look at us with a slight head tilt and with general disdain. But my mates are the most intelligent well brought up and respectful people I know.

I usually find it's a good place to start, especially the back or if it's a hardback the end flaps are fairly good too.

If the front cover says "Mills and Bloom", then as a rule I probably won't even check what the back cover says. Likewise if has the word "bestseller".

Most of us do it. If we didn't I might get into every club like I do in every other city in the world. We're judged on how we talk too. The one thing my Dublin accent is good for is when talking on the phone in work to a customer who's expecting some fat cat to ring them.

Growing up in a low income family or a disadvantaged area can be tough. Not only from a money point of view but also having to watch your back with dodgy people living in the area. I guess the skanger 'look' is a defence mechanism.

This isn't a bating of a certain looking person, it's an observation of a certain look.
I for one never said that the skanger look means the person is bad or stupid or uneducated. I just think that skangers, educated or dumb or whatever, have a look in the facial area and I would love to know why it's universal, that is all.

Of course you get judged by your appearence. Its animal instinct Ferfuksake. You see someone and straight away you judge them to assess if they are from the same species, same herd, whether they are a threat or a freind or a mate or food. Jesus christ, we havent evolved that far yet that we accept everyone straight away. Even the most pc person out there still looks at someone and straight away makes some assumption about them.

This is something I've often wondered about. Even with expensively dressed celebrities like the Liam & Noel Gallagher and Steven Gerrard the "look" is obvious.
An ex of mine was convinced that their facial features are those of people who suffered from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or at least were exposed to significant quantities of alcohol while in utero.

I've had this conversation with my dad so many times. It's not always the case but very often you can tell if someone is from a less well off family. There's a sort of hardness in their faces. Also, rich people eat better, they can afford to keep themselves better too! And they're not given coke in the bottle when they're two so they've got nice teeth!!!!

I wonder do accents actually have anything to do with the shape of your face too? I'm not trying to be funny or stupid by the way!

I find a lot of more upper class people i have encountered in Ireland tend to look more English. And i've especially noticed this while outside of Ireland and surrounded by both Irish and English. A lot of them tend to have darker skin. So perhaps they have some Anglo Saxon blood in them. Familes that have a history of being wealthier in Ireland would be more likely to have English blood in them i reckon.

Anyways in Ireland i don't look working class even though i have been all my life. But in the US i look like a Latino gangbanger. Especially when the head is shaved or i have braids.

The only distinguishable characteristic I can generally see is lack of sufficient nutrition between people.

I couldn't pinpoint somebody's background based on their facial characteristics, accent or clothing. I do notice that some scumbags tend to seem like they either never eat or only eat junk but in most cases, I can only tell they're a scumbag by their actions. They usually look exactly like somebody from a 'well-off' background to me.

And teeth are a bad indicator. My teeth aren't exactly great and I grew up in a "middle-class" background.

Scumbag and skanger are not necessarily the same thing.
Anyone form anywhere can be a scumbag, defined by their
actions. For me, it's the scowl, the aggressive look, the weathered beaten look that
skangers all seem to have
