Swine flu and reminder about training when unwell

As just posted in my training log, but just to let others know.....

I've been feeling unwell since Sunday, and went to the doctor yesterday who is pretty certain that I've got swine flu. Am housebound until next week and on a course of Tamiflu. Don't feel too ill, pretty mild case it would seem.

    Two things...

    1) Whilst it's impossible to identify where exactly I picked this up, there is a chance that I picked it up at the Pearl izumi 10k on Saturday (or I may have already been a carrier and spread it myself at that race!). As many other boardsies were there, I just wanted to put out a warning in case you're not feeling great yourself, as it's something you might want to get checked out.

    2) The doctor I went to see specialises in sports medicine, and gave me a pretty stark warning about training when you have a flu/chest infection. The warning involved the words "potentially fatal" (albeit small chance), so just a reminder to anyone who tries to push through their training when feeling unwell.

    *regrets shaking Peckham's hand now*

In all seriousness cheers for the heads up and warning about not training if you start feeling unwell.

Yea, I'm surprised more people aren't falling with it. I got a similar warning earlier this year. Basically along the lines that if the virus spreads to your heart muscles you are in the 'permanent damage' camp.

I didn't feel great myself after the weekend but I think mine was more of a head cold. Nose still runny but feeling back to normal since Monday.

What symptoms did you have Peckham? I note you said 'mild'.

Even if it doesn't kill you, it can still affect you in a bad way, as I found out to my cost almost 2 years ago. I continued training despite a chest infection, and ended up with a very painful bout of pneumonia. Don't do it!

The symptoms can vary quite a lot between individuals, but mine was just feeling generally lethargic, which would normally go away after a day or two rest but I wasn't perking up at all. Started feeling a little dizzy at times yesterday when I went back to work. Doctor also picked up on some chest strains when he listened to it, which he says I would have noticed myself if my fitness wasn't as good as it is (relative to a normal person).

I've actually been quite worried about the swine flu too.
Anyway, thanks Peckham for the heads-up.

    its a virus...............

It's actually quite hard to get the flu unless someone sneezes on you. The WHO take a standard of four hours contact time betwen an infected person and a non infected person before infection becomes an issue (unless your exchanging saliva / respiratory secretions). To give you a idea of something that is really contagious, for TB a contact time of minutes is considered a serious infection risk.

Flu cannot replicate outside of the body. It's not going to be multiplying in the gym or any other public place, but it can survive for up to 24hrs on hard surfaces so these should be cleaned regularly - ATM number pads anyone? I'm becoming a bit OCD about the whole hand washing thing :D

Latest figures would suggest that only 10-15% of persons diagnosed as having swine flu by doctors actually have the virus when they are swabbed.

Are you saying you have a science degree / degrees?

Not if you have a good anti-virus installed.
