    Triathletes fill them with nuts and raisins so they can bend down and eat out of them without taking their hands off the bars.

    They have a benefit in that if you like bars coated in chocolate or whatever they won't have as much of a tendency to melt in these things compared to a jersey pocket.

    Their main disadvantage is that your legs can hit them if you are out of the saddle, sprinting or to a lesser extent climbing.

    They are handy to have for long-distance Audax-type stuff I reckon. I too got one on the Marmotte.

    Some triathletes use them but really there is no need for one for anything other than IM distance and longer. Actually there is no need for them at all as you should really just be using insulating tape to stick your gels to your top tube. :)
