Trouble with Bank of America.

    Hi.

I was on my J1 this summer and used BOA as my current account.

    I'll try keep this brief.

I left a balance of ten dollars in my account upon leaving the US. I figured I would just leave the account go dormant.

A few days after my return, my account (despite them saying banking with them is free!) was charged 12 dollars in fees, bringing it's balance into minus figures. I have since been charged around 70 dollars in overdraft fees, even though they created the overdraft.

    Some basic q's:

Do they keep charging 35 dollars every week the account is in the red?

What happens if I do not pay them? To be honest, the way they charged me, then charged me for the overdraft they created, is prerry annoying and I don't fancy sending money their way.

Will i affect my credit rating here?

Any answers or advice from anyone with American banking experience would be most appreciated. I have asked them to shut the account and they won't do so until I pay all their fees. I also asked them not to post to my old address but they said they can't change my address. They're pretty rubbish!

You should have closed the account since you were not longer going to reside there.

AFAIK a debt in the US cannot really affect your credit rating here, although you don't know where you'll end up 10 - 20 years down the road. They didn't open an Overdraft for you, your account went into a Forced overdraft, same thing happens with BOI or AIB.

I recon you should just pay it off, close the account and forget it.

The same thing happened to me. Bank Of America are assholes.

Anyways, eventually they stopped sending me letters, so victory I guess..

Agree with this. You don't want a bill of a few hundred if you go over again in a year or two, on business, a J1 or holiday.

This same thing happened to me too, I noticed 2 charges of $35 when I returned, I went into overdraft by 2 dollars, before I left I lodged $20 to account, and spent $10 of that thinking i was fine but as they had applied the $35 charge it made me over drawn by 2 items...they charge $35 per transaction which is overdrawn.
I rang them and they said if the account is not active for 100 days it would be closed, and the account disappeared off the online system after that time, they never sent me any letters though despite having my irish address.
