    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to recommend me a film? I just watched "Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy" and found myself fairly interested in it.

If anyone knows of any films that are any combination of:

    Mind blowing
    Space
    Future
Meaning of life (not Monty Python please. Seen it nearly as many days as I am old)

Hell. If there's one that is all four, please let me know.

    Cheers!

Never heard of Tommy Boy and I've heard loads of things about FMJ. I'll check them out whenever I can. Many thanks.

well I have to say Tommy Boy fantastic.

Just managed to check it out on IMDB and it looks quite promising. Another one I was forced to sit though the other night was "Mona Lisa". If you like the British underworld, this films a gem.

If you like over the top slapstick, then you'll find Tommy Boy funny. It has its moments, but anything by Chris Farley feels like a poor mans Dumb and Dumber imo.

That being said I don't see how Tommy Boy fits in with your request.

    Watch:
    Event Horizon
    Sunshine
    The Fountain
    Moon
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    2010

First step: forget ever watching the Hithhiker's Guide movie, and pick up the books (except Mostly Harmless, which is pretty bad) or radio series which are infinitely superior.

As for films featuring Mind blowing, Space, Future and Meaning of life a couple of films fit that bill perfectly. 2001 A Space Odyssey, Solaris (Russian / American versions are both decent, or check out Stalker which is better again, but not set in space) or the Magnetic Rose segment of the anime collection Memories. They all pretty much fit the criteria you listed. Event Horizon too, which has more people being dismembered, which I guess is either a positive or negative depending on what way you look at it :pac:. Also Moon which unfortunately is probably just out of the cinema at the moment.

Edit: see L31mr0d got there before me! +1 on the Fountain too, a very underrated film IMO.

Thanks for the titles everyone. I saw Event Horizon a while ago....when I was 14. Needless to say I didn't sleep for a while.

As for slapstick? Well the Naked Guns kept me laughing for a while so I'll take a chance with Tommy Boy.

Tommy Boy has both Chris Farley and David Spade in it, avoid like the plague

As for mind blowing space movies, its not a comedy, or in any way funny, but Sunshine is one of the better sci-fi movies of the past few years, try Solaris as well

I'm pretty sure Hans Moleman made Tommy Boy, as a sequel to his wildly successful "Man getting hit by football"

EDIT: Oh yeah forgot to mention another recommendation

    Dark City

just tried your criteria in Jinni .
It came up with a bunch of the movies other posters have mentioned.

But a couple of others too - Planet of the apes ( original) a movie called imposter with gary sinise and The Fountain.

It also recommends moon, I'd second that one personally.

    Dark Star

    Silent Running

The Abyss kind of had mind blowingish feel about it, as does close encounters, no actual space mind.

    Wall-e

Have you seen the Alien movies, specifically the first two.

Also if you want mind blowing meaning of life stuff, in the most subtly crafted way, you can't get any better than The Man From Earth.

Maybe Serenity... Not quite the comedy that Hitchhiker's is but it's kind of light hearted in a dark and serious sort of way.. And in the future / space / a little mind-blowing... You might want to watch the series "Firefly" first though - it's only a few episodes long...

I'm still trying to decide if I like it or not!

    and
    Starship Troopers

Wall-E, for me, is the one that ticks all the boxes.

    Memento is pretty mindblowing too

    Lost in space
    Liar Liar
    Dumb and dumber
    Borat

    :D

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned but 'Primer' ticks all the boxes (apart from slapstick) Great movie that took me four attempts to think I had a hold on what was going on. I suggest watching it and google 'Primer Timeline' and watch it again with this aid. Let me know what you think when you get around to it.
