    2. Do i need to check my blind spot when moving off from stopped every time e.g. at traffic lights, etc?

Indicate initially when moving out but as far as I know, there is no need for further indication. (I'm open to correction).

Only when moving off from a parked position - not required at lights etc.

    1. I agree with Wishbone Ash, yeah indicate when starting & then dont worry about it & just concentrate on getting the bloody car to face the other direction! ;)
    2. I think I'd check even if at lights, a cyclist or someone may be around...

NO harm in checking, they can't really mark you down for being too cautious so long as you dont sacrifice your progress to checking all the time.

One thing to remember is that you wont lose points for being too observant but you will for not being observant enough, so it's never any harm just to flick your head around when moving off anywhere, I did it and passed first time. If theres one thing I keep hearing time again is people failing on lack of observation.

You have to indicate when moving forward in the turnabout - anytime your stopped and plan to move off you have to indicate in that direction, again you wont lose points for doing it but could if you don't!

    Good luck!

It depends what you mean by 'observant'. Over-checking mirrors can result in a penalty.

Unless you are changing position at the lights (e.g. turning, changing lane, there really is no need. Moving off from the kerb is different as you are changing position and the cyclist could be in your blind spot.

I would not check a blind spot when moving from a set of lights. There is no point in doing so and it only serves to take your eyes off the road.
However, when moving from a kerb it is essential to check your blind spot, trust me! [rant]Two days ago i was unfortunate enough to be a cyclist caught by a motorist not checking their blind spot, i now have 4 stitches in my face and a puncture wound in my shoulder, which needed a further 5 stitches![/rant]

Thanks for the advice everyone, test in a week and dreading it!
Alanstrainor, that is awful, you poor thing! Just shows you what the consequences of one moments carelessness can do. Hope you're on the mend and feel better soon and that the driver has learnt a lesson.
I would be very anxious about cycling in Dublin from the stories i have heard - 2 of my friends have been in serious accidents, that have ended in hospital stays.

God thats awful, sorry to hear that.

Its so annoying how so many drivers disregard the right of way of cyclists in certain situations but thats a whole different issue. I was a student in Galway for 3 years with a bike as my main mode of transport, I could tell you some horror stories!

I don't think the importance of the blindspot can be overstated. But I wouldn't check it when setting off from lights myself. I check both wing mirrors though because I've learned that cyclists can frequently seemingly come from nowhere up my left side and motorcyclists can do likewise on my right hand side!
