Can anybody tell me how much this job would cost me, as I have been told by a garage that it needs to be done. Car is still driving and is leaking oil in the head gasket...Looking for a few quotes at the moment. Thanks.

Are they sure its the HG? Have you examined the leak yourself? I would be reluctant to just take the garages word for it, unless they know these cars inside out.

These have a tendency to leak oil from where the oil filter housing bolts to the block, due to the o-rings on the one way valve behind the filter housing going hard over time. The timing chain covers can also leak oil.

Given what i've said above, If it does need the HG done, You'll be looking at €200 for skimming and the headset (HG + head bolts), then the labor to strip the head off and put it back on, say 8 hours. Also throw in consumables, oil + coolant.

I can see the leak around the head myself

    Which part is leaking?

I'd say you'd be lucky to get out of it for less than €700, at an indy....

Don't know anyone in south dublin, but the likes of Gala Engineering in Dunshauglin rebuild engines day in, day out.... they also do the skimming there, so don't need to send it out....

I only done one a few weeks ago and I think I charged about €650.
