Marathon Expos - what are they?!

I've never been to a marathon before, but I'm entered to run a 15km race that's part of the Istanbul Marathon. Apparently I've to collect my number at the 'Expo' the day before. Can anyone tell me what to expect - do I need to allow a lot of time for it? Is it just a registration desk and some stalls selling running gear or is there more to it than that? (I won't have much spending power!)

    Thanks!

Depends on teh size of the event. In Longford it's a school hall with a few number collection desks and a stall selling running gear but at the big city marathons it'll be a full exhibition hall with number collection, chip registration and the like at one end and stands selling all sorts of stuff in between. It's not just gear - other races will be touting there as will physio / orthotic types, gels & nutritions stands. I generally avoid them but some people love them. There is usually a pasta party in the area too.

I try to go to the expo two days before the marathon, as they tend to be quite busy the day before the race. Gives you time to wander around it without worrying about spending too much time on your feet the day before the race.

I was in NYC when the marathon was on last year (wasn't running it though). Went to the expo though - not sure Mrs Peckham understood why I wanted to do that, given the endless number of things to be done in NYC!

Sounds like a good idea, I don't think I'll be in Istanbul until the day before but if I get there earlier I'll try collect my number as early as possible.

Depends on the marathon, Spent most of the day in the expo in chicago was class.. dont bring yourcridit card you'll spend a forutune...

But on the other side Belfast was a tent with numbers and one stand selling water.

For a 15k you will be grand going the day before, i'd say you might get some good deals on stuff in Istanbul.
