Apple drops the 40GB Apple TV and reduces the 160GB model of its living room media player from 399 to 269

good news alright but you can buy it for €156 ($229 converted) in the states. Thats still a big difference.

Was thinking about getting one and would like to hear suggestions from owners. The fact that we can buy videos / tv shows a big issue and how often do you use it. Is it a fad for a few weeks and then collects dust or is it a device you use regularly?

We can? There are no videos/TV shows on the Irish iTunes store. Yes, you could have a US account (I have one and I'm guessing a lot of people here do) but that's still a workaround/hack that Apple could plug any day they decide to (though I very much doubt they will).

As for the Apple TV, even at the lower price point, I just don't see the point. It can be hacked with Boxee or XBMC and become a lot more useful, but still, those are hacks and even then, it is majorly underpowered for most HD content that doesn't come from iTunes. In its' factory state, I think it's almost completely useless.

e156 is a fair price for what it does if we could get films/tv shows. Which we can't.

So at the moment it's essentially a e229 doorstop.

I use it to watch videos and video podcasts in the living room where it's connected to the projector. Most of the time I just use it to surf youtube after I've watched a rented DVD.
