Alternative to sugary snacks

    Am trying to cut down on sugar. Have tried to make breakfast as sugar free as possible but in the afternoon (like right now) I start to crave a twix and a sugary coffee. What's the alternative? I've already had a bunch of fruit this morning. What about granola or cereal bars? Are there any specific ones that are good or are they all just as bad as normal chocolate? Also need suggestions for the evening, around 9pm when dinner has passed and I start to get peckish again. My girlfriend bought me some sundried bananas to snack on but they're actually pretty disgusting! Any alternative suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

    Fruit is packed full of sugar. So are cereal bars.

    Try some unsalted nuts (pistachios are particularly nice) but watch the portion sizes. About a handful is a portion. You could also try snacking on some popcorn.

    Yeah, sorry didn't make that very clear. I suppose what I'm saying is that I'm trying to cut down on chocolate and sugary coffee. Am happy enough consume natural sugars, i.e. fruit and/or cereals. Thanks for the suggestions.

    Hi OP. I like sugar free jelly when I need a hit of sweetness. You can get it in tubs or make it from a packet. Its also a good way of sweetening stewed rhubarb for example without adding sugar to sweeten it.
    The nuts are a good tip. One I'll be using myself. Thanks!

    I would avoid the cereals and bars and granola. Most of them are staggeringly high in sugar, but have enough salt in there as well that you don't taste it.

    Unsalted nuts are good. There are little packets of "Good4U" seeds which are very handy, especially as they are already snack sized. I like the chili one. At this time of year, the hedges are dripping with blackberries, which are a brilliant snack. And even in the city, you'll find some handy.

    Yogurt and cottage cheese are good snacks too.

    If you like something sweet what about Snack a Jacks - they're Rice Cakes that are covered in a caramel flavour. You can get them in the biscuit isle in the supermarket. They're wrapped in a caramel coloured wrapper.

    Not sure how little sugar they have but I know calorie wise and sat fat wise they're quite low. Also nice to have with a cup of coffee.

    Just throw a bit of sweet 'n low in your coffee to replace the sugar if you're not against sweeteners!

    The thing with nuts is its easy to over do it. I imagine most people don't relise the amount of calories and oil in them.

    My latest is pickles. A whole jar is >50 cals and will last a week easily

    My favourite dried fruit for snacking on are natural apricots, mango, figs, and pears.
