Hi all. Im looking into buying a laptop and have 500/600 euro to spend. I am not very knowlegable but nonetheless would like to get value for my money.
The machine will be for college which really means internet, dvd's, playing music and word processing. I would like a decent battery life as my previous laptop lasted about 50 mins after charging. Mobility is important so I'd be happy with 15" screen. Also from reading other posts it seems I should be looking for a dual core processor?? Any help in what I should be looking for would be much appreciated and what I can expect for my budget.

Moreover could any helpful people recommend good Free software for the laptop for anti virus, anti spyware etc?

    Cheers guys!

Only good advice I could really give you is go after a propular laptop, preferably one that Powercity have in stock, along with another retailer (Harvey, D.I.D, etc.)

You email Powercity asking them for a better price, they'll ring you back and knock 10% off the cost (or thereabouts), you then tell D.I.D/Harvey that Power City are beating them, and they'll agree to beat the price, if you can prove it.

You then (after a day or so) ring Power City back again and explain you're very sorry for inconveniencing them, but you are offered a better price on the laptop, however, you love Power City and would like to get it off them, can they lower the price again by any chance.

They'll beat the price by a little amount, and you request that they email you a copy of the reservation of your laptop (tell them you need it cos your employer is paying for it). You check your email, print the invoice and bring it to DID/Harvey, who will happily beat it by about another €10 or so.

It's a fair bit of messing around, and it may not pay off, but risk VS reward; I'd say it's worth a shot!

I got a Sony VAIO NS20E/S a few months ago. Most places retailed it at approximately €600. D.I.D were cheapest with €580 on it. I did the above and walked out of D.I.D with the VAIO for €460. Can't argue with results :)
