IGN give it a 6.8! oh dear :(
    Presentation
No career mode of any sort. You can't easily tell which cars you have. Beating all of the more than 100 challenge events nets you nothing. At least the challenge demonstrations are good.

    http://ie.psp.ign.com/articles/102/1024698p3.html

    Eurogamer - 7/10
    Videogamer.com - 9/10
    Play (80%)
    CVG (6.7/10)
    ArsTechnica (”Buy”)
    NowGamer (8.5/10)

Lack of a career mode seems to split the critics, some like it and some do not. The IGN video review is pretty harsh.

A harsh enough review from IGN. I'm really not so sure if I want to buy this now, I was going to get the new PSPGO buy now i'm not so sure.

I just browsed a good quantity of the screenshots on IGN and I have to say it looks really poor. Given that the PSP is roughy equivalent in power to a PS2 the game looks terrible..... if the screenshots are accurate I'm surprised, I expected much better.

Only 4 cars in a race and no career mode means I won't be buying.

Is it correct that the PSP version had a hand in delaying the PS3 version?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭macpac26

Id imagine they wanted to release the PSP version first in order to maximise sales for those wanting some new GT action. GT5 was always going to be delayed regardless. The PSP cannot pump out the same graphics quality of the PS2, i think GTPSP looks more like GT1 from the original Playstation.

I think the main criticism of the game is that there is no structure to it at all, its not like previous games where you start from scratch and build and tune your cars. Its basically a game for playing in short spurts with building your garage as the only main task here.

Interesting to note that you can transfer all your cars over to the PS3 version. Im undecided ill have to play it first.

I think you hit the 'nail on the head'! Isn't that what the PSP is all about? Perhaps that's why there's no Career Mode and just Single Player.

The graphics from the IGN video review look very jaggy!

    Then I watched these...

...and thought it actually looks like a great game!:)

No online multiplayer or damage model yet and again.

Gran Turismo = Pokemon with cars - fun

Having read the IGN review and some of the other ones floating around - it seems like the IGN guy was just expecting a bit too much from the game. I think it's really good to have a serious GT fan review the game though, as I can see a lot of people being disappointed with the game. The fact that the games lacks online play is a bit ****, but if you have a PS3 you can use Adhoc Party to play online with your PSP games. As for no career mode, is it just me or does the single player mode of GTPSP sound like career mode? I mean you race to get points to unlock cars. I guess the fact that you apparently can't upgrade your car as you progress is the problem? I suppose the fact that the game was such a long time coming is part of the complaint people have as well - it seems like a game that was cancelled and then brought back a couple of times.

That being said, I just don't know what people want from PSP games sometimes. PSP games that are like full home console games get bad mouthed for not being 'pick up and play'. Then 'pick up and play' games come out and then they're crap because they're not as fully featured as their home console couterparts? Pfft.

Anyone who thinks the graphics are bad needs to watch the videos irishman posted, the games looks great in videos, not so hot in screenshots - all PSP games look better in motion. It runs at 60fps, very few console games these days even manage that. I won't know how I feel about the fact that there are only 3 cars to race against, but seeing as GTPSP apparently has better AI than GT4, it may not be that big of an issue for me. The fact that you can unlock cars for use in GT5 is a pretty big plus I think.

I'm more of a Motorstorm fan these days so I've been looking forward to Motorstorm PSP more. This probably has to do with the fact I'll be getting GT PSP free with my PSP Go though. :pac: It looks great, it handles like GT and there are plenty of tracks. That's all I was looking for really, but I'm guessing I'm much more easy to please than the hardcore GT fans.

Those videos do look alot better than the screenshots. I'll have to go and read more reviews so!

I clicked the Eurogamer link expecting to be shown a video for Gran Turismo and up popped a video showing an advert for NFS Shift. I nearly jizzed myself but then realised what it was.

If its ad-hoc, sony need to release Ad-Hoc Party on 1st of October for all regions.

QFT. Wasn't there some patent filed in the US a while ago or something to that effect? I'm hoping Tokyo Game Show will have some info on stuff like this, because Adhoc Party iz da bomb.

However, Polyphony Digital has not only delivered on their promise to make a great portable Gran Turismo, they have created the best portable racer this generation.

Make no mistake, this is Gran Turismo as you remember it but on a handheld, and done in a way that betters what I imagined was possible.

2004, back when Gran Turismo PSP was announced, is a long time ago. Gran Turismo PSP delivers, but it doesn't fulfill our enormous expectations.

With incredible visuals and a literal ton of vehicles and courses, Gran Turismo PSP is definitely an amazing accomplishment for a portable title.

Gran Turismo on PSP is not quite as slick as its PS2 or PS3 brothers and the lack of a career mode is surprising. It's clumsy at times and the quality varies immensely, but it's still a class act.

It's you and your machine versus the circuit. In this respect, Gran Turismo PSP doesn't stall, effortlessly powering to the front of the handheld field in a manner that is likely to leave many a petrolhead breathless.

Whether you get the most out of GT on the PSP will ultimately depend upon how much you enjoyed the rest of the instalments in the series. If you're not already a fan of the slavishly exhaustive self-confessed Real Driving Simulator, then this will do nothing to change your mind.

Easily the PSP’s finest tuned racer so far with loads to do if you’re happy without the career mode. Online would have bolstered the score a notch, though.

But there's no point in denying that Kazunori-san and Polyphony Digital have succeeded in bringing the GT experience faithfully to the PSP without having to condense or cut out anything that made the series what it is.

Coupled with archaic AI and the isolating absence of PlayStation Network support, this makes for a game that feels unfocused and regressive, despite its considerable technical and mechanical accomplishments.

Gran Turismo hits shelves at the same time that PSP Go does. At first, anyone would assume that it's one of the most important games for the handheld, but its visuals and the number of cars available are not what we expected. If we take into account the whole series thus far, we don't understand why they decided to don't add the Career mode to the mix, and just four cars racing at the same time doesn't seem enough.

The iconic series has always been first and foremost about the driving, and Polyphony Digital has managed to encapsulate that perfectly. It’s just a shame that some of the more endearing bells and whistles have had to be removed.

While the driving mechanics are great, if somewhat dated, the numerous presentation issues (like the complete lack of a career mode) really keep this from being what it could, and should, have been.

Superb car handling is the only redeeming factor for GT PSP. It feels great to drive. But that driving needed to be packaged with an actual racing game and that game isn't here.
