we have a ford 6600 which is only used for topping and agitating. lately it seems to be able to not cool itself. i started to notice it last month when topping it could go 3/4 up the temp gauge. today when agitating it went right up to the red. granted it would be going at around 2500 revs. what could be the cause and what should i check. is there any termostat that i could take out. rad is full of water also but the water gets a rusty brown colour fast even when changed. the engine has about 10000hours done with no work being done to it.

The rust would make me think that the liners are breaking down but it could be just that the system needs flushing out, I would start with the thermostat though and then see if there was a blockage in the rad, if you want to test a thermostat drop it into a jug of boiling water and it should open if it doesn't then thats your problem sorted.

I think you follow the pipe from the bottom of the rad to the Engine block. The thermostat this mounted on the block very close to that point..... If i remember correctly!!

Thermostat is mounted on top of the head, just where the feed from the water pump and the feed from the head come together, when tested this will open at the temperture stamped on the thermostat, however I agree you should have coolant in this engine as they are a wet liner block and you could run into problems with water getting into the sump, I would flush the system first and make sure the rad is clear, also you could install a lower temp thermostat, worked a treat for me when I started agitating first

I have a ford 4600 with this problem as well.

I don't think it is the thermostat as it is boiling the water when flat out.

I flushed the rad a few weeks ago, but to be honest it sounds like an expensive problem.

Who is the best around to recon engines (apart from Murphys in cork and an individual in wexford who will remain nameless). I want to keep the original engine for the sake of originality.

(I should add my tractor has had an easy life. It came in from the UK when about 4 years old, was used for spreading fertilizer and going to mass(!!!!) for about 10 years, and we have it for a futher 10 where it only ever has wrapped silage (not on hire) and did general farm chores.)

I sent 2 ford 7600 engines to Roberts eng Wexford for reconditioning and I was happy with the results.
