    Hi Lads,

Lost in wonders of my first single speed conversion and have hit a snag. The bottom bracket cups , both the fixed and adjustable as well as the lockring are in **** condition . The spindle is in good nick so I dont want to go for a a new sealed BB. Does any one know where I can get just the cups and lockring.

It is a Raleigh from the early 80's and the cups are the standards 32 mm size to fit a square tapered spindle 5s.

    Any advise welcome.

    Thanks as always.

    Kevin......

Why on earth would you want to keep the ****e cup and cone? get a sealed one and forget about it. Probably be cheaper too.

You might want to have another read of the question there ted , I dont want to keep the cup/locknut I am looking for a new set. As to why why not a sealed set, I am looking to keep as much of the original bike in use for a load of reason cost Authenticity, no packaging etc etc etc....

Nah what I ment was cup and cone are ****e, why would you want to fit it?

Cost? sealed will be cheaper IMO
    .
Authenticity? well obviously original is better here but, you will have the authentic maintenance too.

Packaging? well that usually goes in the bin?

As regards to picking one up? Ive never seen a new one, except on ****e new bikes.

    Kona

not really interested in trying to convince you as to why I am going to resuse as much of this bike as I can tbh but quickly.

cheap sealed bb retail for bout 20 euros I am looking to see if anybody has some spare cups lying around so the cost issue is there in a nutshell.

I dont mind the maintance thing as I am trying to learn as much as I can and I enjoy messing around with bikes.

I like to keep packaging and waste to a mimimum in all aspects of my life so if I can pick up some cups loose somewhere I ll be happy.

I will leave it at that....

Then why didnt you just say you wanted some, BB cups for free? , Im probably talking to the wall, but e20 for a guaranteed 2 years hassle free, as apposed to refitting components that are proven to be ****e, and will give you hassle, is well cheap TBH.

Good luck with the rest of it.

    Christ,

I never said I wanted anything for free. "Lying around " does not mean I am looking for a free handout , I have before and will again pay for any component I pick up from a willing seller on this forum.

You're state of confusion and cheeky implication that I am cheap because I am trying to restore a 20 year old biycle and using this forum as source of information and possible second hand parts is a matter you ll have to address by yourself I am afraid. The old style BB I am replacing are in a **** state because of wear and tear not because of any design or component issue and are not proven to be ****.

P.S Just got some on Ebay so thanks to wotdef for taking a look in his shed and thanks to Kona for the insightful words.

They are proven to be ****e, thats why they are on ****e bikes, would a decent bike have them? no!. weve moved on.

Well you said you didnt want to spend e20 on a BB, so yes I would call you cheap. Your packaging comment was quite funny too, youd swear a BB came wrapped in asbestos, stryofoam and came in a 1 foot box, double wrapped in plastic.
It comes in a tiny box, youd do more harm to the planet wiping your arse after a ****e, or do ya use grass?

Oh and there is a special on grandad cardigans in boyers for when your fixie is built, gotta keep up the image man:p

Yes they are on plenty of **** bikes alright but there are load of older bikes that have them and that are not **** so, not sure if that stands up.

My motivation for not buying a new BB was not driven by cost but by the desire to reuse old parts but you are not really getting that point so lets leave it there.

Cheers for the Boyer info , sure while I am up there I'll pick you pack of tampons maybe, PM me your postal address !!!!

A high quality cup and cone BB will outlast any sealed BB. They also spin better. That is why most track racers use cup and cone. The only downside is the extra maintenance. The only reason BB's have moved on is for convenience. If the OP wants to put the maintenance hours in, then on his/her head it be, but don't say cup and cone is ****e, just because you have only been exposed to ****e cup and cone BB's.

If that was the case, we wouldnt have progressed to sealed and then external.

Old parts are worn parts, total waste of time fitting, and re-fitting. Also from the enviromental point of view, the constant lubing up is going to affect the planet, as is the amount of grease used etc

Because track bikes are used inside perhaps? Bring it outside and the water and crap on the road will rape it. It could be made of titanium and still be ****ed.

Bikes have progressed, External, sealed have all outlasted cup and cone. Cup and cone is 3 generations ago. Its like saying yer mother theresa is a better ride than your wife.

I used cup and cone for years. Only just got a bike that has a sealed unit. Cup and cone were ok, but you did have to clean them out a lot (every five months in my case).

The really big problem was that the quality of the components had been declining for years, as everyone migrated to sealed. The last one I put in cracked in situ.

Also, as with threaded headsets versus threadless, it is just easier to have what everyone else has.
