Car scrapped due to accident...

    Hi all,
Had a crash last Monday and car is a write off. It was peugeot 207 and the front/engine etc. is completely gone. Otherwise, it's in perfect condition so the guy that towed it said it would be worth good scrappage as the doors/seats/etc etc could be used.

Everyone seems to be telling me different things about how to go about the best deal... or get the most money back. Some say to deal directly with them and sort myself, others say to go through a solicitor (who I will probably need down the line anyway)... then there's the question of getting the money for the car... does the scrappage come out of that?

Sorry... head's all over the place, would appreciate it if anyone out there could tell me what's the right way to go about getting a good scrappage deal and good money for the car... can I do it myself or will I let someone else handle it?

Are you claiming off someone else?

No, just from the insurance... not sure who's liable yet... dad says to expect the worst and presume I will be...

    Well, I'd say this ;

Whatever the "salvage" value of the car is worth, don't accept the first offer - haggle, haggle, haggle with whatever insurance co you're dealing with. Gather up likewise valuations/prices (trade) from the net to use as evidence.
Re; Solictors, well, they are a greedy shower and will want their fee's.
Question; who are you insured with and who is the other party insured with (not brokers, insurance co)?

Had started looking around for smiliar models and have found one or two already so will keep looking.

I'm insured with Zurich (Wrightway Underwriting) and haven't a clue who the others are insured with... have had no word from them yet...

Don't do anything with the car yet. First of all, when you're claiming off the insurance, either your's or their's, the insurance company will want to send an assessor to evaluate the damage. Next, if your insurance decide to write it off and pay out on it, they will then own the car and it will be up to them to sell it off. I think the same would be true if the other party's insurance does the same.

In short, since you're going to be claiming off insurance one way or the other, just assume for the moment that the car is now theirs. You've paid them, let them worry about scrapping it and getting the best price, they will already have the mechanisms in place to do that. And, any money you were to make from selling it would simply be taken off your payout so it would be hassle for nothing.

    As above....
let the insurance company deal with it all..... tell them you want full value on the car (pre accident value) as it is a write off and for them to take ownership of the car.

Let them sell the crashed unit....

You can try to make a few bob if you are smart enough but is is hard... basically you would need to agree the LOWEST salvage value on the car... the insurance company then subtracts that off the pre accident value and gives youa cheque for difference.
now you are responsible for scrapping the car, if you can sell it for more than the LOW salvage value palced on the car you could be quids in, but don'r forget garages 9 if your car is in a garage or tow yard) will probably charge you storage till the car is sold and removed from their premises.....

    There's always ebay.

Unless there's bits stabbed through the crankcase, the mechanicals of the engine, and maybe the gearbox are alright. ECU can be salvadged, all sorts of expensive little gubbins that peugeot will charge a pretty penny for new can come off it.

Just thought I'd update you all... as I'm quite surprised by the whole thing.
Did what you suggested and had looked around various garages etc. and priced same model with roughly same mileage etc... prices ranged between 9000 - 13000€ so was :D when the insurance company offered 13500... so not going to haggle
