Apparently VW is eying up Suzuki as another addition to its brand portfolio.
There have also been continuous rumors that VW would be interested in a tie-up with Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor Corp (7269.T) and a person familiar with the matter had told Reuters in August that there had already been talks.

At the event on Monday, VW's Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn said that the product portfolio of Suzuki would fit well with that of VW group, but he declined to comment further on media reports about VW's interest in Suzuki.

A german article on this speculated that Suzuki may be used to get VW better access into the Indian market.

Probably makes sense as Suzuki already use the VAG 2.0 TDi in the Vitara range. They also have a factory in Hungary that produces the Swift afaik. It would also give VAG access to cheaper 4x4 platforms.

Fiat might not be too impressed though as they share technology with Suzuki at the moment via the Sedici/SX4 platform.

but that was due to GM involvement in both companies which has come to an end

There were also rumours somewhere than VW were looking to buy up a motorcycle manufacturer..... Since their current president is a bit of an enthusiast.
