I was just wondering if anybody on this forum is a member of a gym in Cavan? Im looking for people to train with as the gym I am in at the moment is never that full and a lot of the time I am the only person using the free weights (the rest of the people there are using the threamills, bikes etc)

I find that when I train on my own I dont push myself as hard as I could. I seem to be doing a lot of the exercises half heartedly. I asked around in work but nobody seems to exercise here :) To be honest I am thinking of just getting a home gym and training at home(I am just about to buy a house near Virginia).

Hi gazzer, the only gyms in the area are at the Leisure Centre in Baileboro and the new one which is about to reopen under Skelly's garage in Ballyjamesduff (not sure of the name). Neither would be big training gyms, mainly aimed towards classes and general fitness rather than weights training. If you join one of the football clubs in the area they almost all have their own gym set ups with weights etc and there would be more of a training/pushing yourself element, its the end of the football season though so that might not suit either, sorry can't be of more help.

Grainne101. Thanks for the reply. If I was any way good at playing football I would join a club but unfortunately I am pretty cr*p :D Looks like I will have to go to home gym route unless I can persuade some of the lads here in work to join my gym so.

My father is in a gym in a hotel in Cavan, can't remember the name of it, but it has a gym and pool. It's very much geared to machine work and cardio, but they have a reasonable selection of dumbbells, no free weight barbells.

Funilly enough I am a member of that gym. Unfortunately I havnt been there since Sept. I used to go 3 times a week but the times I did go there wouldnt be that many people there. Im going to start going back but I am moving to another part of Cavan so will only be able to go to Belturbet Fitness centre at lunch times from now on or early evenings after work (5 - 6).

B-Life Health and Fitness opened up in Virginia about a year ago, I think they're doing a special offer on membership during the Halloween weekend, to mark their anniversary.

I'm a member, along with my OH, who has had arguments with the owner, so we were recently looking for a new gym to join. We checked out Cavan Crystal hotel, but it's super expensive considering the heaviest dumbbell is only 25kg and there are NO free barbells.

We checked out a few places in Cavan town, but ended up coming back to Virginia. It's small (four treadmills, one rowing machine, two reclining bikes, two stationary bikes, maybe half a dozen resistance machines, a smith machine, a roman chair, a power rack, three benches and a free weights area) but very cheap- we're renewing for 6 months for about €150 each, I think.

There are dumbbells going up to 33-35kg (can't remember exactly) and there are handles and plates for making your own.

There's one Olympic 15kg barbell which is shared between the bench press and the power rack, so you're out of luck if you arrive to go squatting etc. and someone is already using it. There are several lighter bars, but the plates which fit those bars aren't as numerous or as heavy as the ones for the Olympic bar.

Can't comment on the quality of the programs they offer as I've been a student member up until now and was told "We don't do programs for students, it's not worth our time, you're basically getting the gym for nothing already."

The changing rooms have one shower only- another reason to avoid busy times- and loads of lockers which aren't big enough to fit anything larger than a small backpack.

There's no water supply, but 500ml bottles are available at the desk for €1.

Other than the fact that a few friends have told me staff can be unfriendly (I've never had any problems) and some weights users can be super unfriendly, it's a grand little gym, so long as you avoid busy times. It does advertise a "ladies-only" gym, but it's crap. The resistance machines don't have weight added to them, there are 6 pairs of dumbbells, the heaviest of which is 5kg, and very often the machines and weights are put away for classes to take place, though I don't use the women's gym so I dunno if you'd actually get kicked out if you were up there. It's not even truly ladies-only, men go up there all the time to do abs work because that's where the mats, medicine and exercise balls are, and doing abs in the regular gym just gets in people's way.

Classes are pay-as-you, kickboxing, spinning and something else I've forgotten. Only three options.

if your looking to get into weights your more than likely gonna have to befriend a forigen national in cavan, sorry for the broad sweeping statement, but with GAA being so big not alot of lads are into body building.... i used to work out in the gym below skellys in BJD and there was some guys taking weights pretty seriously in there.... there used to be a great gym in oldcastle entirely for weights but it might be closed???

I don't know of a gym in Oldcastle entirely for weights, but there was one beside the credit union which had lots of weights and not a whole lot of cardio equipment, but that's since closed down.

The gym in bailiborough lesiure centre is quite good. it is a decent size with a very good slection of free weights and benches and also has all the machines and tredmills etc.
i only use it the odd time when i'm in that part of the country visiting the in- laws but there are always a few guys who look like they know what they are doing, again a lot of them are eastern european but not all. you can use it on a pay as you go basis so you could go a few times to get a feel for the place without having to join.

Well 2 years after I first posted its strange to see this thread active again :D Since I first posted in this thread and after trying just about every gym in Cavan town and the outskirts I ended buying a cage, olympic barbells, weights, dumbells and a few benches off the net and set up a home gym in one of the spare rooms.

It has everything I need and I have been using it fairly regularly over the last 2 years. The only downside is though that because I train on my own you dont have anybody to spot you or motivate you so I am thinking of trying out a gym again just even for a few months. I need to find one where all the Eastern Europeans go :D They definately know how to train.

I love living in Cavan but when it comes to training I definately miss Dublin.
