Recently I completed the ISA Level 2 powerboat certificate and would be keen to gain more experience on ribs.

Besides actually going out and buying a rib how can i gain further experience? Is it possible to rent a rib?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Join your local sailing club and offer to do rescue cover. Most clubs are short of rescue personnel. Although some clubs now want you to be another stage up the qualification ladder, before you can drive their ribs.

Would they allow you to do it if you have experience with your own boat i also completed the Level two course recently and then bought a boat and have been working away on it but would love to get my hands on a rib for a spin.

I dont think its possible to rent a RIB in Ireland (Although I have seen it is possible in the UK). Why not club up with two or three people and buy a decent RIB between the group and operate a sort of time-share system between the group of you.

JamesM has it right. Rescue cover is a great way to get boat handling experience in all sorts of interesting situations. Sailing clubs are often crying out for powerboat drivers to work on events or on regular weekly races.

In our club National Powerboat Cert qualifies for use of the smaller rescue boats. Safety Certificate or Advanced Powerboat required for the bigger rescue boats. Insurance also requires membership but we have a way of sorting that out for somebody who only wants to drive rescue and is prepared to volunteer their time. We also organise subsidised powerboat training for full members who volunteer for duty post-qualification.

RIB rental is possible. Just poke around google and you'll come up with a few options. Last summer I needed one and the best quote I got was €950 for a 5m RIB with a 50hp 4-stroke for four days . I could collect in Dublin and tow myself or they'd deliver it to me for an equally jaw-dropping per mile charge each way (I needed it in Kerry):eek:

Heck, did they give the driver with that!

Considering you could get a decent 2nd hand rib for abotu 5k from the uk 950 quid for 4 days is EXPENSIVE (granted it was probably a brand new one for rent)

She'd want to be some driver at that price:D.

Basically, RIB rental isn't an option to get experience, especially with a massive insurance excess if there's any damage.

I was very fortunate to be able to borrow a RIB in the end for my Kerry trip.
