    Hi,

going down to the midlands for the weekend, Glasson seems to remain very expensive as there will be 4 of us. Could anybody help to choose from above, I think that Mount Temple is better? All reasonable mid handicappers.

    many thanks

'Better' is a relative term. If I had to choose between the two I'd play Moate, but what about Athlone or Esker Hills. I think if you're mid-handicappers then Athlone would be your best bet and you get some nice surroundings too.

I would play neither if I were you.

You should play New Forest, Esker Hills or Glasson, all of which will reduce their prices with a bit of haggling. New Forest would be my pick of the three; however it's pretty close, and you should be able to get green fees for c. €30. Esker Hills will be no more expensive (possibly cheaper); however it can be a punishing track for a mid / high handicap golfer if you are playing it for the first time. Glasson is a superb track IMO and they have reduced their green fees in recent months.

I rang up both New Forest and Glasson a few weeks back on a Sunday morning to ask for a price for four grren fees. New Forest said €100 and I mentioned this to the guy on the end of the phone in Glasson and he said the best he could do was €120 (still not bad). We actually opted for New Forest as one the lads never played it before and I must say it was in great shape.

You may get either Moate or Mount Temple for €15 - €20 but the extra few quid you pay for either of the above three courses are definately worth it.

I've played all the above except glasson.

Moate = am a member and still love playing there. Easy enough course and in good condition but I played there yesterday and they were sanding and working on 2 of the greens (spiked & sanded) Competition on this weekend too.

Mount Temple - lovely course and tough enough. I play off 22 and find it a nice challenge. Haven't played it in a few weeks though. Very accommodating too – we wanted to play on a Sunday morning and they told us to come on over even though there was a competition on and they would fit us in.

New Forest - another fantastic course, only played it once but is one of my favourite courses. They cut back the rough a good bit making it a bit easier for higher handicappers.

Esker Hills - very tough for my level of golf. Played it last year when i was starting out properly playing and it crucified me!! Will have to go back again now I can play a bit better!!!

Athlone – another tough enough course but in fantastic condition – well it was 2 weeks ago. Again not for a high handicapper but well worth playing. €35 for the round on a friday. Some very challenging holes.

Why don’t ye play a few of them? They are only a few miles apart anyway.

yeah take charlies advice and play all of them!. The midlands has some great golf courses, and in fairness nearly all are offering good value deals at the moment.

    Hi

thanks for all the advice, we got a deal on Glasson and everybody is comfortable with that, so that is definitely happening, the highest handicap we have is 16 so I think we will be ok.

    thanks again
