My plan is to have 2 x 1tb hard drives hooked up to my pc full of all my movies and tv shows that i want to play on my 42" tv, some are 720p and some are 1080p.

Ive been looking at the popcorn hour, xtreamer, wdtv etc but ideally i want to use xbmc as i like the interface and skins. My pc is right beside my tv also so do i really need one of these or could i just hook up the pc direct to the tv??

If i do this im lead to believe i can get 1080p using a dvi to hdmi cable but i wont have any sound. What do i use for sound?

What do you guys think is my best option??

    Thanks

You really need one of the boxes you mentioned or a HTPC.

If your pc is beside the tv, you should just connect it directly if you have the required inputs.
Get a DVI to HDMI adapter and regular HDMI cable for the picture, and if your tv has a set of red/white phono INPUTS, (check the manual) you can connect your stereo sound outputs on the pc to this.

    Mixed responses eh.

Why you say that MediaTank, my pc is pretty decent, seeing as its right beside the tv is there really any need to buy a popcorn hour etc??

Ive been looking at dvi to hdmi cables on ebay alright, im just not sure exactly what cable i should use for sound, these are the inputs on my tv.

It appears that you do have a HTPC, for audio you just need two RCA cables (left and right) to hook up the stereo sound to the inputs on the TV or use the PC Audio in.

I have a core 2 quad with an nvidia geforce 8600 gts graphics card, i dont have a dedicated HTPC or anything but i think/hope it should be ok.

So i just need one of these cables from the pc to the tv and a hdmi to dvi and it should be good to go?

Yip, and then Mediaplayer, VLC Player or whichever you choose will do the playback.
