Whatever can be said about Rté, generally the factual portions of their historical/social programming can be relied upon to be well researched, well produced and well presented.

Why then do they constantly piss on their own chips and ruin what could be an interesting little piece by not only getting the Ballygobackwards community players to act out the reconstructions really, really poorly, but also by simply grabbing the first available extra who walked past the wardrobe department and offering him a leading role that he would be proven to be completely unsuitable for within the opening seconds of the programme?

Tonights Csí (SEE-ESS-EYE-FADA, according to the continuity, no doubt in case Angry from Athlone were to write in demanding to know why David Caruso et al had not made an appearance in the show) is about the Murder of Larry Griffin , a Waterford Postman.

From the Archive photographs shown extensively in the opening sequence of the programme, Mr Griffin was nearing 50 years of age. A tall, lean rangy man; he was Slim & healthy of build, and being Ex-British Army, he posed with a Military gait; he wore a tight slicked back officer-style haircut which was greying at the temples, and had a prominent bushy moustache.

We were then immediately introduced to the "Reconstruction" larry :

This Lidl Larry was a moon faced porter-bellied man in his late 30's (give or take a few years), of no more than average height, who walked with a pronounced stoop, and had long, greasy, curly hair with nary a moustache to be seen.

For all intents and purposes, were the reconstruction to be about the disappearance of a roadie for the Waterboys, this would be the ideal chap, but he's sadly miscast for this particular role.

Why would Rté & co go to the obvious trouble of researching a programme such as this, only to destroy any kudos it may have had by (A) casting Killinaskully extras in speaking roles, and (B) completely disregarding all available reference evidence that could only help them in their quest for credibility?

    's beyond me, in fairness.

Poor auld Larry - first they never found his body and second, RTE couldn't find an actor who looked even halfways like him.

That bunch of lúdramauns they had in the dock during the court case looked like extras from Jo Maxi as well.

Thought the same, pity because it was an interesting programme.

An interesting programme but poorly put together in my opinion. It is a shame though that it wasn't made that bit later so they could have included the information from the files that are to be released into the public domain.

Hopefully they'll do it again, but properly, when they go through the files.

And was it just me, or did anyone else (for just a split second, mind) think that when they say this listed that it might be a CSI special in Ireland? I got really excited. :o

    Thanks

I thought the Corks Bloody Secret programme was anything but forensic as many things pointed to a British undercover operation. Is it possible in a rural area that no one has ever named a single person involved.Doorstep killings by masked men were not an IRA tactic. Why did Republican volunteers rush to protect famillies from attack? Imperial officials were angry with Cork Protestants for refusing to take part in the Tan War.
