New Golf R images leaked

It seems every new car about to be launched these days is leaked months before its debut. But here it is anyway, the new R32 replacing Golf R:

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Volkswagen-Golf/243270/

The 3.2 litre V6 is going to be ditched for the highly tuned 2.0 litre TFSI unit used in the Audi S3, probably due to obvious reasons.

    I like it anyway,

Better looking than the Mk5 R32 IMO. Only a 2.0 yes but look at it this way, because it will have lower road tax and running costs than the R32, there should be a lot more of them on the go, even in this country!

What's the point of a fast Golf 3 door, when the Scirocco looks so good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 774 ✭✭✭Seperate

    I like.

The lights need a polish though...

The whole point of the R32 was the engine being different. This is just a jumped up GTI in drag.
So so misses the charm of the R32.

Lower tax and fuel consumption than an R32? So... just like the GTI and Sirocco then?

No Scirocco with more than 200bhp as of yet though!

+1, German cars should always have at least six cylinders.

Because from the rear the Scirocco is a travesty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Nah, it's quite nice!
    vw_scirocco_2008_uff_01.jpg

The rear of the Golf is basically the same thing only a few foot taller :D

Looks like a 90's Mitsubishi Colt it does!

I wonder was the same argument made over the old Scirocco and Mk1/Mk2 Golf GTi, or were they not as closely matched?

I'd still have to go for the focus rs.

The cynic in me tells me VW is dropping the old V6 engine because of emissions :(

I don't think its purely emissions based unkel we still have the R36 and the new S4 is a charged 3.0 V6,it's sad day when there is no 6 cylinder golf the last 3 versions all had the 6 cylinder cars as the flagship.

I'd buy a MK5R32 (my next car will be a MK5 R with some forced induction) before i'd buy this.

The S4 in question was downsizing from a V8 though, wasn't it?

I meant emissions for the Golf. Just looked it up and indeed it must be all about emissions :(

    The tuned special edition 240BHP Mk5 two litre emits 189g/km of CO2 where the R32 Mk5 (250BHP) emits 255g/km

Sad day for car enthusiasts when emissions win

The Golf MkVI is all about cutting down on production costs over the MkV. I'd say it down to production costs as well as emmissions that sounded the death nail in the V6 Golf. Also the 2.0 TFSi is readily available throughout the VAG range, plus the fact it is a very tuneable, clean engine which will appeal to the bean counters in grey suits in the VAG board room.

Unfortunately for car manufacturers smaller capacity, higher output and more fuel efficent engines with forced induction are preferred over straight out displacement these days.

I think that R looks fooking class! Does anyone know its stats? (too lazy to google at the mo!)

Another reason not to get one. The popularity of the Mk5 GTi was its downfall/turnoff for alot of people. The appeal of the R32 was the fact it was a rare sight on the roads. Gotta love that V6

    Hang on a minute... they're dropping the 4wd 3.2V6 for a FWD 2.0... :(

Is it me, or do I always imagine a Golf seems to appeal to those with no imagination of their own whatsoever? Its a plain, dull car IMO.

I'd much rather a Focus RS, or even a Scirocco over it.

Seeing as they're selling out on the engine they should at least have kept the 4WD like the S3 has.

Its still AWD it says so in the press statements.

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Volkswagen-Golf/243138/

"Closely linked to the set-up used in Audi’s S3, the new four-wheel drive system is designed to react more quickly than the Haldex transmission from the previous-gen Golf R32, and up to 100 per cent of torque can be apportioned to the rear wheels. Four-wheel drive brings a weight penalty of around 80kg, but the latest R is still 35kg lighter than the R32, which used a 3.2-litre V6 and left many enthusiasts frustrated at its chassis dynamics."

It is 35kg lighter then the R32
