Help with buying a car

I'm looking for my first car and need some help on what to buy. I need something big enough as I'm pretty tall myself and would often be travelling with 4 adults etc. I'm 18 I have a full license and my budget is anything under around €4,500. Because of my age I need to think about insurance costs but petrol shouldn't be a problem. Was thinking of getting a 2.0 litre Nissan X-Trail but is that a bad idea? Was quoted €2,500 insurance is that the going rate these days? How much less would it be on a smaller car for someone my age? Any ideas anyone?

Why not go for a 01 1.4 Ford Focus, roomy car with plenty of
poke, nice car for a young fella to start off in too.
Shouldnt be too hard on insurance either.

A 1.4 litre Focus is many things but it certainly doesn't have plenty of poke, especially with 4/5 adults on board.

+1 , Could'nt recommend a focus highly enough but do'nt get a 1.4 if you do any sort of out of town driving. Its one of the heaviest cars in its class.

I'm looking at a 01 1.4 at the moment. It will only be two of us in it most of the time, it wont see much town driving, and will do mainly trips between Waterford/Dublin once a week. Would it do the job? I'm thinking of a 03-04 1.3 fiesta if the focus is too sluggish

I have a 1.4 Focus. I drive up and back to Dublin once a week, and in and out of work during the week. It is sluggish when compared to a 2.0 Diesel, but it has no problem doing 120kmh + on a motorway. I also get around 650kms out of a full tank.

If your trying to keep your insurance costs down, the 1.4 is the way to go. There isnt a whole lot of difference between the 1.4 and 1.6.
