New Seatpost?

    Hi all,

I have a Giant Defy 4 for just about a year now. It's been relatively problem free. The one problem I have always had, is the joint between the saddle and the seatpost. Innitially, the saddle would rotate back so that the front of it would point to the sky. I tightened the livin' bejeepers out of the clamp and now I get a very irritating creeky noise from the saddle/seatpost. Perhaps I have over tightened it. But the nose still seems to be creeping slowly skyward.

The seatpost itself seems like the cheapest of the cheap. It's basically a pipe with a bend at the top with a single bolt through it. There are marks on the seat post where the clamp has been slipping around.

I'm wondering - should I buy myself a new seatpost? One with a better mechanism at the top?

Secondly - how do I know what size to get? Should I measure my existing seatpost? Would this one suffice?

Thanks for any tips and help.

Not sure if getting a carbon seatpost is the best idea. I think there is an inclination toward an alloy because of stories like this. It does sound like a new seatpost is in order though

Unless you can find out the measurement from the specs (or by asking someone who has replaced their seatpost in the same model), it's best to measure it, e.g. using digital calipers (which are always a handy thing to have around).

    Eeek.

I ordered it coz i'm a sucker for a bargain. I measured my seatpost with an old calliper (not digital). There's roughly in or around 1mm in the difference between the two, so I would say it will fit. And the collar has enough space to tighten that added millimeter.

With regards the horror stories with Carbon Seatposts - I'm hoping to be exempt from such fortunes due to my infrequency of spins and my miniature height limiting my weight to about 70kg.

    Thanks for the replies.
