You get picked for it if you have what it takes. very similar to the big brother auditions.

There is a long and lengthy selection process, that runs through months and months of current moderators looking at current active posters, that need to tick a number of boxes.
When a small few candidates remain, Devore ( seen here holding the microphone) puts the remaining contestants through a number of games. The last man standing is then selected as a moderator.
