I bought a secondhand Macbook without discs. Saw discs for Macbook on Ebay but when they arrived they would not work. Does anyone know how to tell from the numbers on the discs which version of Macbook they will work with?
    Thanks

The gray disks only work with the specific model of computer they were bought with - they can be used to restore or re install on the machine you bought them with.

They will not work to install on a Macbook if they came with an Imac etc....

I was caught with this when I bought one for leopard a while back - complete waste of money.

Yes, I want to sell them again but don't want to catch someone out like I was caught. It say Macbook on the discs but there were so many Macbooks and the discs will only work on one specific model. But which one. There must exist a list somewhere.

How old is the Macbook that you bought?

If it was bought since Leopard was released it would be licenced to use Leopard and you would therefore be able to buy the Snow Leopard "upgrade" disc for 29euro.

The OS version mentioned on the disc should give you a clue as to what model macbook the disc is meant for. Check when the OS version was released and find out what models were available at the same time (check wikipedia)...well, i'm sure you can work from there and figure the rest out :D

On the under side of the MacBook you should see the model number - If I remember correctly that should match what's written on the top side of the grey discs.

appleserialnumberinfo.com will tell you what OS originally shipped with your computer.
