I'm looking to get a digital delay pedal. Looking for one that costs about the price of a second hand Boss OD-3. Anyone got any suggestions? I'm a complete n00b when it comes to delay pedals. Advice would be appreciated.

Depending on how much ya have there is a few nice ones about:

    Marshall Echo Head €109 (RRP)
Danelectro Reel Feel Echo €155 (RRP)
    MXR Carbon Copy €250 (RRP)
    Boss DD20 Gigadelay €225 (RRP)
    Boss DD7 €165 (RRP)

There are loads out there, the Marshalls & Danos sounds deadly. There is also one made by Lexicon (its pricy but tasty).

    Hope the search goes well.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Echohead. My mate got one in Music Maker for €49, returned it because it was broken, and the second one he got had exactly the same problem.

And the Carbon Copy is analogue.

I've got a Boss DD-6, and it's great. It's since been superseded by the DD-7, so you could probably find a good deal on a second hand DD-6.

There was a batch of them that had an issue, was there a weird noise coming out of it after about 5 mins when he was powering it with the batterey?

The new batch out is working fine, the issue was something to do with the power supply from the battery and not the 9V adapter. Works fine with the adapter for the old batch and the new ones work fine either.

I'm looking for a pedal I can actually afford though. Jobless student and all that shiz. I'd love the Carbon Copy but I'm too broke. What would be the main sound difference between digital and analogue?

Just found the Line 6 echo park. What are peoples opinion on these? They seem to be about the price I can pay and it says they're based on the DL-4. I don't know much about the DL-4 but I have seen it in quite a few rigs so it couldn't be too bad?

How much are you seeing that for? What's your budget? I thought you had €60ish.

I'm seeing it for 49. Half price in a local music shop apparently. I will have 60ish when/if I sell this OD-3.

Edit: just checked thomann and the price seems a lot higher. Much confusion. Clearly not half price.

Thomann is charging €88 for an OD3, and €144 for the Echo Park. I doubt you'll be able to engineer a straight swap, but grab it with both hands if you can!

I'd also say, if anyone out there is looking for an overdrive pedal, the OD3 is probably the best mass-market one out there!

The repeats from a digital effect will be exactly the same, identical every time. An analogue delay signal will deteriorate from repeat to repeat, usually using high-end frequencies and maybe distorting a little bit. If you turn the feedback right up, it'll go into self-oscillation, and you can change the pitch of the feedback with the rate control, which would lead to "space ship" noises. Cool as hell on a proper pedal. Digital pedals usually can't do that, and the ones that can don't sound as good at it.

Digital pedals can get much much longer delay times, but with analogue, maximum delay time is usually proportional to price. The really high end ones can get up to a second, like the MoogerFooger delay, but that costs somewhere around €700. I think 300-500ms is the norm.

I don't think one is 'better' than the other. Different uses. Digital I think is especially nice for really rhythmic/percussive precise sounds. And you can easily get a tap-tempo digital pedal, which is very cool. Tap tempo analogue delay is hard to make, and therefore expensive :(

Ah thank you. I think the pedals used by the bands sound I really like are digital so I think I'll keep looking for a digital one. Sounds like it'll be more useful to me. :)

I would say that digital can cover a lot more ground than analogue. But be careful when you get your pedal, delay is a very addictive thing :D
