    Hiya
I recently switched to Ntl 10mb broadband.
Only snag is the wireless router isn't great.
Not all rooms in our wee house are covered.
    Its a Cisco EPC2425.

    Any recommendations on a replacement?
Must be ntl cable compatible and my landline operates of same.

    Thanks.

I would call the lack of wireless quality good thing..if the signal does not get very far then its a lot harder for someone to hack in via the wireless connection. Im assuming you have at least WPA or higher encryption though.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to replace the whole unit as UPC have them locked to their network.

All you can do is disable the wireless functionality on it and then use another wireless router connected to the UPC cable modem.

locked to the network? Sorry now for being thick here but if there is a problem with the router I cant just replace it or even test another router to make sure that it is indeed the problem?

by "locked to the network", pizzahead means that the modem cannot be replaced with something else, but you can disable the ROUTER part of it and use an external 3rd party one, in bridging mode, to handle the network.

so your just adding a seperate router to the cisco modem.

Exactly what is the coverage of the wireless modem? a few metres?

It will usually depend on the location. Impossible to predict the performance of a wireless router in advance.

    Range is about 6m.
    Old house, lots of concrete.

How do I disable the ntl/cisco wireless function?

    Thanks.

6m= roughly 19 feet-are you sure the wireless is on? this is an awfully weak signal

There's a user guide for the modem here.

I'd say 1st, check that none of your neiboughrs is using the same channel as you. other wise change it.
2nd, make sure that the output power is set to 100% (in wireless / Advanced menu).

I have the same router, and I couldn't get anything to connect to it first tim eit was installed, then as soon as I scanned for WiFi networkds around, I found out that it's set up to the same channed as next door. I Changed it, and every thing is working fine since then.

You could also replace the cisco antenna with a better one. you could buy one from Komplett or elara

    Thanks.

    Downloaded the manual.
    Followed instructions:

You must access the WebWizard in order to configure the residential gateway. To
gain access to the WebWizard, use the web browser on the PC attached to the
gateway and complete the following steps.
1 Open the web browser on your PC.
2 Type the following IP address and then select Go:
    http://192.168.0.1

BUT I get message server http://192.168.0.1 can't be found!

You need to find out the IP address of your router and type it in instead of the 192.168.0.1.....
to do so, open a command prompt, and type in: ipconfig
take note of your default gateway, that's your routers IP address... type it into your browser and you're sorted... (user name/ password for the router are blank/blank (meaning leave them both empty)....

Sorry its one step at a time.......
    Following message now appears

"The user name or password you entered for area “Cisco” on 192.168.1.1:80 was incorrect. Make sure you’re entering them correctly, and then try again."

Tried a variety of passwords but no joy...

    eg:
    12345
    1234
    0000
    00000

    Also left fields blank.

    Any suggestions?

When I click on any tabs I get "This feature is not enabled.

This feature has not been enabled in your cable modem."

except System tab allows me see page.

Have you considered using your powerline instead of wireless? It destroys wireless in just about every single way. I use it in my house and can play games on the third floor with the modem on the first with no drop in connection, it's really amazing compared to wireless.

are you leaving both fields blank, the username too? its meant to be blank and then press ok. then you click on "system" tab and back to "setup" to get into the settings. also accessing it with 192.168.100.1 seems to be less buged out for me than 192.168.1.1.

i had a problem getting in too, and i called UPC and they remotely reset my modem or something.

also, all of the tabs are disabled besides those 2.

    Hiya,
Have changed channels over the past couple of days with no change.
Haven't noticed any other networks either.
    Power o/p is 100%.
UPC suggest moving the modem. Pain with cable runs etc.
Can't believe this is happening in a 2up/2down house!

However, I noticed wifi is now fine on both my laptops but the signal on an iphone is very poor. This wasn't the case with a netopia router.
Have changed the antenna but little or no improvement.

Is moving or bridging the only options?
How difficult is it to bridge?

    Thanks.
