Do all societies meet on a weekly basis?

I've got my eye on a fair few (Hist, Phil, Gaeilge, Music, Ents Crew, LGBT, others) and I also want to join a sports club or two.

How many societies can a first year med student realistically take part in?

Anyway, I was afraid someone would say that :(

I'll have to prioritise An Cumann Gaeilge 'cos I'm on the Scéim Cónaithe and they won't give me money unless I do Irishy stuff. Balls. Knew I should've done Arts...

Don't know if this is the right place to post this but just wondering if anyone has anything to day about the St.Vincent de Paul society on campus. Any good?

For when they meet: Phil and Hist have weekly debates on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, plus random debating competitions throughout the year; the LGBT have an evening event most Wednesdays, and open up their on-campus room for tea/coffee/lunch most afternoons; and I don't know of a sports club that trains less than twice a week. As for how much you'll be able to do in first year medicine, I've seen med students on the committees of, among others, the Hist, the LGBT and the frisbee club, so it's clearly doable; I'd imagine it just involves giving up sleep periodically. Totally feasible, right?

I don't know if Trinity had quite as few hours as we did when I was in first med in RCSI (I had anything ranging from 14-20 on a normal week, which really isn't a lot). Technically we were expected to do lot ourselves outside of that.. but.. erm.. >_>

Anyway, back to the point! I definitely had plenty of time for societies, I got fairly involved with quite a few, so if they don't load you with hours in first year you'll be grand. It's later on when they kill you afaik! :)

Join it. Probably the society I most passively joined last year, but the most worthwhile by far. Lots of things to do to suit all timetables/interests, and the people are incredibly sound; none of the kind of cliques that you may find in the Phil/Hist. Make sure you make their inaugural meeting where they give a quick run through of everything they do; I think it was Wednesday of week one last year.

Nope. All societies/clubs look for is your name and an email address, which doesn't have to be your TCD one.

I volunteered with them all last year and it was definitely one of the better decisions I made that year. I just joined cause it was free and went along to their first meeting for my friend, but once you start volunteering it's weirdly addictive...

As a TP last year I was active with about 3 societies properly (ie 1 thing a week of theirs), and then 3ish more (occasionally going to events). Not sure how medicine hours compare to TP though, we had about 22 per week I guess. It depends on how much you enjoy free time/eating/sleeping/studying.

Not all societies meet on a weekly basis. I think most of them succeed in doing so. Often there will not be enough to do, e.g. the political parties don't have as many meetings as the large societies because they mainly exist to participate in national events.

I suspect that as a first year med student, you will want to quickly choose one or none in which to specialise, because it's a busy course and societies can take up a lot of time. The best way to deal with this is to join anything in which you are interested and be active early in the year so you can get an impression of the state of play. Everyone is used to the fact that medicine has a tough workload so your plight will be understandable.

Finally, ignore the naysayers. For all the talk, including earlier in this thread, very few societies end up as "cliques" in the sense that they repel outsiders. Almost every society wants lots of active members.

The SWSS meet weekly as well. Can't comment on any other political societies, but the Pirate Party SHOULD be doing so as well.

I'm surprised because I have seen about one ÓFF event advertised in College for every year I have been here!

I'm sure Cumann Gaelach is great. They tend to have smart people joining them, and they're active but I don't know what exactly they do. Players is a must if you are interested in drama or acting, it's a real centre of culture in College.

After my time in CSC - I left it in April 2008, the PDs started to wind up in late 2008, so I presume they were wound up last year. I know for a fact that they did not recruit members in preparation for winding up DUYPDs in 2008/09.

I think for all courses, it just depends how organised you are with your time! Some have more hours than hours and will be a bit intense, but they all have time for extra-curricular activity. I know med students who do rowing (soooo much training) and TPs who do loads of stuff for mathsoc/physoc; as well as people who divide their time between a few clubs and socs but not going religiously to any one in particlar, and still manage to get good grades. To keep up with the work it'll mean you're really busy, but I like this, it kicks the "just goin out once a week" thing's ass!

I have found VdeP great! They are super organised, have loads of different things on at different times to suit everyone, and are a really welcoming group as said before with no cliques. Last year I started going to the Kids Club on Sundays, where a group of students take kids from the Pearse St estates out to do activities (museum, climbing, trip to the park etc etc), its loads of fun! They also have a trip to Santiago to walk 100k over a few days to raise money, I didn't go but heard so much about it being great that I will definitely try and go this year! And also the auditor/president this year is a really cool guy and will do a great job running the soc!

Yeah it does seem mad. They don't advertise many big events except the AGM but they do meet every week to discuss current affairs and stuff in the papers. In fairness I went to one or two meetings (as I did with other political socities just to get a feel for it)and there was a good mix of people.I know they did things like go to brussels last year aswell.

Agreed. It's all relative some people are fast learners and soak up everything others have to work more it just depends on the person.

I found the VdP brilliant too. Great bunch of people. They have a meeting one evening in the first week of lectures where people from all the activities tell you about them and you sign up for one or two that you want to do.. If you sign up during freshers week i'm pretty sure you get an email about it!!
Another one thats good for volunteering is the VTP which, among other things, gives free grinds to kids from primary up to LC. I'm thinking of giving it a bash this year. Gave grinds for money last year and really enjoyed it!
Just going to do a JC maths or something easy..

I seem to remember seeing in the CSC exec minutes sometime last year that the society had been deregulated.
