Santa Rita 120/Reserva or Casillero Del Diablo are both quite nice, fairly mainstream wines but good at that

edit: realise it's for a gift, what's your price range?

Dunnes stores are doing a deal on Palo Alto chillean, it's usually ~€15 but now only €8.50. The Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Reserve is lovely, and so is the Sauvignon Blanc

Dunnes have a south american wine festival on at the moment. Loads of new chilean and argentinian wines. They have a ltd. edition vina maipo red for about €20 I think.

Lovely Pinot Noir called Trio; made by Concha Y Toro.
You can pick t up in Oddbins (and elsewhere im sure) for as little as €9/10 which is a bargain for a good pinot.

    Thanks all for the responses.

It's just a small "thank you" gift 25/30e is fine.

Montes Alpha is cracking chilean wine around €25 and is even wraped paper which sits the gift idea. Its smashing medium bodied red.

I must say I love those "Errazuriz Max Reserva" wines (Cabernet or Shiraz). They're not event that expensive, maybe eighteen quid.

€25-€30 is kind of an awkward price for Chilean wine. As in, most of it you see will be far cheaper than this. That Santa Rita Medalla Real (mentioned above) pops up here and there alright, and would be a good option. I think that's twenty-odd euro.

    p.s.

That Dunnes sale is, like many supermarket wine sales, is disappointing and misleading. Here is a blogpost I wrote about it -> http://bit.ly/15eRuU

And there was also an article in the Irish Times at the weekend about supermarket's dodgy wine sales -> http://bit.ly/44c6uo

And here is an indepenedent wine retailer's opinion on Dunnes' "bogus" wine sale (a year old but still relevant) -> http://bit.ly/jBQ5G

+1 on Montes Alpha. The Cab Sauv is to die to.

    Hi,

Just wondering why Chilean? Superquinn have a French wine sale on at present - although it can be difficult to figure our which are good.

Althernatively, O'Briens have a couple of excellent wines which were on sale up to recently. Torbreck GSM is a full-bodied aussie wine which tastes great. Even better is a South African called Glen Carlou (was reduced from 20 to 13, but would be sensational even at 20) - a real full-bodied, special occasion wine. YUM!

If you're not sure overall, get advice. O'Briens are great for this - as are other reputable wine shops.

    Enjoy...

Chillean wine was just be discussed on movies and booze on newstalk (moncreif show) maybe you can get a repeat of that later or on the net - if not they repeat it late at night and I'll be driving home so I should be able to catch it.

I heard them talking about chilean wines on the show last week. The golden rule for chilean wines (or so they say) is Colchagua Valley for reds, Casa Blanca for white and Central Valley for mass produced everyday drinking vino (most of it is tripe).
