Cutting myself while shaving. What AM i doing wrong here?

    Hello!

First of all, i've been having a beard for oh roughly 5 years off and on now, and when i periodically shaved it off i used a trimmer and a shaving machine.

These last few months i've started using razors and even got one of those sensitive skin shaving creams. But i still manage to cut myself atleast 2-3 times each time i shave. Is this a phase which will gradually toughen up my skin, or am i doing something horribly wrong?

I feel like i'm 14 and just started to shave. :(

it's most likely the razor that you are using, try changing to something differnent or change how you hold the razor. If you have a tight grip then change to a loose grip or adjust the angle you shave at.

Where do you get most of the cuts, is it in the same place all the time?

I'm using the gillette fusion powered thingie, and when you mention it, i might be clenching the grip a bit too hard. Most of the cuts are in the same region, yeah.

Whilst I'd expect some adjustment going from electric to proper razor
I'd say your problem is technique. Let's be honest, how many of us
were taught how to shave properly?

Check Mantic's videos on youtube, regardless of what razor you use
    it'll help.

    Simples....

Use a facial scrub = preps your beard
    then
Use shaving oil = much better on your skin
    Then
Use Mach 3 = best blade
    Then
Follow the line of your beard, the best advice is to shave down NEVER UP. If you shave up especially your neck it'll bleed. That said if you ahve always shaved up follow your beard. I guess im saying NEVER go against the grain. But try to shave down = best results and may take a bit of training yoru beard to grow that way.
    Then
    Moisturise

All sounds very metrosexual but its just common sense for sensitive skin. Screw the I shave with a bowe knife liars lol :P

Gillette fusion is the best blade!!

Also I thought you were supposed to shave up on the neck!!!! Always get the best shave that way with no probs!

In fairness, most Gillette blades are rubbish... especially the fusion. I use the Gillette Sensor Excel as it's the only one of the lot I've found that works reasonably well. It only has 2 blades which (IMO) is better than 3 or 4.

In terms of shaving direction, it's best to shave with the grain. If you need to, then after you can shave across (90 degrees) the grain. Let your stubble grow out a bit so you can see clearer which way the hair grows. I know that on my neck it changes direction between my adams apple my chin. I used to get a lot of cuts or irritation around here until I paid attention to the direction.

If you want a better shave then check out the safety razor thread above in the forum. Theres a lot of useful information in there.

Since the start of this year I have used not only the safety razors but I have also revisited using all of the available Gillette, Wilkinson, King of Shaves and Boots own-brand cartridge razors.

The Gillette Sensor Excel twin-blade is IMHO the best of the cartridges, as you start adding more blades into a cartridge it decreases the shave quality and increases irritation. A safety razor beats all the cartridges and leaves much less irritation or razor burn.
