Volvo gearbox - parts unavailable??

    My mate has an ’02 S40 2.0 5 speed manual. He has some gearbox noises.

    He brought it to a specialist. Seemingly, the box is only available as a complete unit. He told my mate that the only way to be sure it wasn’t something standard was to split the box. He did this and confirmed it had a “hub” issue. He replaced some bearings and put it back together, noises were unchanged. A second opinion told him the diff was knackered and the box is now split again. He told my mate that the diff was okay and now he wants paying for splitting it again. He found a used box from an identical car but it didn’t fit. He rang the whole country and there’s no more available.

    He’s almost a grand down already. What would you do next??
