SKY multiroom with no landline

Okay, so I have a sky multiroom subscription now for about 3 years. Both living room and bedroom tv's are plugged into Eircom landlines. I have broadband(UTV 7mb) and I REALLY wanna switch to a voip service such as blueface for my phone calls so want to ditch the landline completely. I have not and will never make any Sky box Office purchases.

I've read a lot of forum posts on this landline problem. Some people say multiroom subs MUST have a landline. I hear stories of people simply unplugging their landlines and Sky not bothering them. Then theres the stories of people being sent nasty letters from Sky to plug back in the landlines etc. Some people claim to have been charged too!

A mate of mine mentioned something about Sky looking into an alternative solution to having the landline requirement axed and using some kind of ethernet solution!?!

What are my options? I was thinking about unplugging the landline and just chancing my arm and hoping sky wouldn't bother me. Problem is if I do eventually get rid of the landline and Sky contact me out of the blue asking where it has gone :(

I REALLY don't want to switch to UPC voip for my phone service but I believe it is an option according to this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055653639&highlight=landline.

    Any advice appreciated!

If you have Sky multiroom, you MUST have all Sky boxes connected to the landline.

However if you have only one Sky box, then you don't need it connected to the landline.

Rumour has it (from a reliable source) that there will be new Sky HD boxes in October which will do multiroom with no landline.

I have multi room for the past three years and never have either box connected to a phone line.

Never heard anything from sky about it either.

martinr5232, sounds like you're one of the lucky ones, I might unplug both and see if SKY notice;)

They do notice eventually, it might take them 5 or 6 months.

land line must remain for the first year of contract. Technically speaking, once phones remain connected for the first 24 hours and sky get 2 callbacks on the boxes its ok to chance unplugging them then, handy to have a flylead to plug in just in case you ever need tech support from sky and they require a callback.

I've have multiroom. One skyHD and other in TM9100. Never had problem with sky but I don't have sports or movies. Maybe this is why they don't care?

    Very possible.

indeed, So i take it you don't have your boxed connected to a line? voip or eircom etc?

My opinion on the matter is that Sky only pick people at random and its really the luck of the draw. Sky have nearly 10 Million subscribers between the UK & Ireland with what must be a large amount on multiroom. Now a considerable number of them dont have their two boxes connected to a phoneline and Sky does not have the resources to check up on all of them as has been noted on here and other forums.

I don't see why not, it would be relatively easy to automate. All they need is a bank of phone diallers, connected to the billing and notification system.

Nearly everyone I know that has sky doesn't have a phone line connected. First I heard about people getting told to plug the telephone line back in.

    Multiroom is policed rigorously.

    Do they have multiroom?

I agree with bk. Sky have all the resources necessary to police multi room.

The strange thing about this thread is that I am the complete opposite. I have never heard of anyone NOT getting contacted by Sky when they leave their second multiroom box off the phone line. Everyone I know with multiroom has received a letter from Sky warning them of the lack of call backs and if the line is not connected with the next month the full cost will be applied. I got this letter, my mates and a few family members. I am really surprised that noone else has!!

Conincidentally, I cancelled my multiroom subscription today.

Dreamboxes are great, aren't they? ;)

How do you propose to get your broadband if you cancel your landline? Is wireless available in your area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,449 ✭✭✭livEwirE

@ Pataman, I assume this question is directed at me. I can simply cancel my landline, sign up to UPC 30mb broadband and a VOIP provider and I have all bases covered:D

I've received the letters in the past. As far as I am aware, the callback process is completely automated. Multiple failed callbacks causes an automatic letter to be sent to the registered address. No human intervention required whatsoever.

Sky box callbacks generally don't work with third party VoIP providers like Blueface, Freespeech etc. so are useless for multiroom situations.

It certainly won't run over VOIP, I spent months, literally, trying to get this to work with Blueface. There are many reports of certain devices with certain codecs being able to sucessfully connect. But I tried everything and couldn't get it to work. I'd test it first before you throw out your landline!

    +1

Be very sure it is working to Sky's satisfaction before getting rid of the landline.

I won't be attempting anything for the time being with voip callback, I remember seeing a thread on here a while back with where people reported varying levels of success. Guess I'll have to keep paying my line rental for now:(

Would it not make sense to take upc's phone service aswell if you are taking their broadband? Callback wirks fine with their phone service.
