Supernatural - Season 5 (US) [**Spoilers**]

    Well folks,

Season 5 launches tonight in the US and I'm very excited about it. After the heights of season 4, I really expect this one to be epic though on the other hand, the expectations are very high for the show now so hopefully they can keep up the quality - I trust Kripke and co. know exactly what they are doing though.

Since the other thread is tagged season 4 and is pretty huge, I thought we could use a new one to discuss season 5. Hopefully more people will watch the show this year too - even here, I think there were only 5 or 6 of us consistently following the show last year. This is one to watch people :D.

To any newbies, please note that discussions here are US pace and spoilers will exist in the thread without being spoiler tagged. The show airs Thursday nights on the CW so expect a lot of spoilers by the subsequent Friday :). Any discussion of future episodes though should still be spoiler tagged in thread.

So, here we go... looking forward to everyone's thoughts tomorrow :D.

It's going to air here too isn't it? I know it's been hard to find a continuous run of episodes ver the years (I'm looking at you TV3 ) but it seems Living and 3e are showing old eps at the moment, I assume in prep for the new season? Anyone know when it will start here?

I know Living are only showing the 1st season now (season 1, episode 6 on right now).. it's the first time they're showing it - they must have only gotten rights recently.

Wasn't ITV2 the first to show it outside the US? And they started airing Season 4 in January this year so I'd expect them to start airing Season 5 January 2009.

Really good premiere. I'm happy they didn't just have Dean forgiving same for being such an idiot last season, saying he can't trust him anymore is big.

So Dean is actually an "angel condom" :D I was wondering how Dean could be chosen to kill Lucifer,as it turns out it is only his body that is chosen for angel to come and defeat Lucifer.

The fan-girl thing was really funny. "Can you stop touching me?"-"no" :p

Interesting stuff with Lucifer trying to get his Vessel,Mark Pellegrino did will wiht all those scenes where it turns out his family was murdered and his anger at God made him say yes to Lucifer.

Also Cas is back and a bad ass! I assume it was God who brought Cas back and put Sam and Dean on the plane. Zachariah looked freaked,it seems God is back in the game, that's my theory anyway!.

Good start, hopefully this season will be as good as last.

Very solid episode. I thought things were going a bit slow up to a point and then, bam! the whole Bobby/Meg thing happened. It was very well done too because though Bobby was harsh with Sam, I thought that was really him and he couldn't forgive him - and I was really worried we'd lose him there for awhile!

The fangirl was very funny, both her reaction to Sam and Chuck earlier as well as her "fan fiction" story ("If this is wrong, I don't want to be right" :D).

Dean was his witty self too ("Is that peanut butter?") but yeah, I'm glad that the events of season 4 have not just been swept under the rug and all is forgiven just like that...
    tvnutz wrote: »

Agreed. Who/what else could it be anyway? Though why Castiel is still being all mysterious with the boys isn't that clear yet.

I like the direction things seem to be taking - and the boys against everyone essentially.

Great start, roll on next week :D.

Great to have it back. Nice to see Cas kicking ass for the Lord. With him back I guess God has decided to play a more direct role in events. It'll be interesting to see how this three way war plays out.

Great opening track to the new season The music is always kick ass. It one of the few show I really look forward to and it never let you down, always a great story.

My weekend plans changed, so I got to watch it tonight. Really great episode. How cool was that intro/recap?

Just the right balance of humour, great dialogue, cool twists, and action. You can tell its a labour of love for Eric Kripke (who wrote the episode). I think this season is going to be epic.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Yeah it was great how they mixed the flavours. They had a fan writing slash fiction in one scene and then, shortly after, had Bobby knife himself in the gut. And it all worked.

Anyone else think Bobby was finally going to bite it? They keep doing this to me! I liked how he still cared for Sam but that Dean himself just couldn't quite bring himself to go that last bit and trust him. It's far more believable.

I'm guessing that Castiel has gotten a promotion from the big man himself. God can't intervene directly, so he'll do it by proxy through Castiel. Or something along those lines.

I must admit I'm a bit confused though by the start - they're on a plane plunging to the earth, and then they're in their car? Did they get jumped again or are to assume it landed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

To be honest.. as soon as Bobby said the whole "when this is over, lose my number!" line to Sam, I knew something was up!

I too like how they're didn't just dance around the repercussions of what Sam did also.

Glad to see the end of Rachel Miner as Meg (well, I assume anyways).. she's one actress that always irked me for some reason. On the flip-side, I'm very happy to see Kurt Fuller back as Zachariah. Hope he's in it for the long haul this season.

Best line of the episode: "He looks like Cate Blanchett!" :D

And AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck' to open the episode.... couldn't have chosen a better song!

Haven't seen her in anything before but really didn't like her at all so I'm happy too that she's not the permanent new Meg of this season (I assume so too - doesn't the host typically die when the demon leaves them violently like that?).

I almost forgot about that :). I never ceases to amaze me how funny this show can be right in the midst of the darkest situations...

Speaking of the demon possessions too, isn't it odd that Lucifer still approaches his vessel following the angels' rules (needs consent), rather than acting like the demons, who take over whomever they want?

Dean saying he didn't want to be an "angel condom" was hilarious as well.

Well he technically is an angel so he has to obide by those rules.

Good start indeed. This series is going to be kickass. I wouldn't be so sure it's god behind it. I got the impression from Zachariah in S4 that God is either AWOL or maybe a prisoner of a new rebellion - possibly with Michael as ringleader and zach as his wingman. Maybe another archangel - Gabriel? - is leading the defence. One thing's for sure - they'll keep us guessing for a while yet :)

I know... just found it a bit odd that Lucifer still plays by the angels' rules. I'd think he'd be the first to say to hell with the rules :).

I don't think they have a choice, hence the angels trying to force Dean to allow Michael take over his body.Lucifer most likely didn't have a choice,he had to get permission.

    Hi all,

A really good starter to the possibly last season.
Having the fan involved was a good comedy moment.

    Looking forward to the rest.

Season 4 was the worst season of Supernatural IMO. I liked 501, but do they really have to stay on this religious route? I find the whole Angel/God thing really lame. That storyline never should have been brought up.

Most critics and fans thought that season 4 was the best ever, but hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion. And TBH, they have never brought up the whole God/Satan thing in an overly religious "bash you over the head" obvious way either. It's still about Sam and Dean at its' core and how they deal with everything. And pretty much all sides seem to be at different shades of grey, rather than clear cut good vs. evil...

Dropping the storyline of season 4 would make no sense at all either. From season 1, the show has been building up its' mythology and is one of a few shows where the writers do seem to have had a long term plan all along and respect the continuity from season to season...

S4 was the best yet imo and S5 is shaping up to be a kicker too. The whole God/Angel thing is very Philip Pullman - they are not necessarily all that good (a la the Tyrant in Pullmans novels). And as J said - the storyline is continuing true to itself - it's not being forced in new directions which would piss me off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

Well, episode 2, "Good God, Y'all" was simply fantastic as well. Awesome from start to finish.

When Sam killed the two "demons" in the store and there was no flash from the knife, I thought it was odd but the twist with War messing with everyone's head was very nicely done (and the cherry Mustang instead of a horse - nice :)).

Great to see Jo (mmmmm, Alona Tal...), Ellen and Rufus all back and again, great continuity with both season 2 and 3 right there.

The ending was also great, with the distrust between Sam and Dean finally leading to them going their separate ways for now - still thought it was cool to show how much Dean still cares for Sam by offering him the Impala, but can't trust him on the job.

Much darker than last week overall I thought (though last week was pretty grim too), not as many jokes, though Bobby had the fantastic line "when you find God, tell him to send legs" :D.

Though I also thought Dean's suggestion to Castiel was also outright hilarious (about finding God): "Try New Mexico. I hear he's on a tortilla" :D.

And as always, excellent music in the intro, with Foreigner's "Long, Long Way from Home".

    Flawless episode :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

Totally agree. Brilliant episode. I thought they had messed up and forgot to add in the flashes when Sam killed the two guys with the knife but it was brilliantly done. "War", one of the four horsemen is making people think they demons so they will all just kill each other. Great stuff!

Sam and Dean going their seperate ways at the end will also be interesting, they can have a few episodes where they have seperate cases but obviously they will come back together at the end.

Lets hope this type of quality keeps up and this season is as good as season 4 was.

Excellent episode. I remember near the start thinking, "Jeez the cinematographer here made Ellen's eyes look dark a little when Jo attacked - a bit confusing". Oh me of little faith!

Sam killing two innocents was interesting, especially him staring at the blood dripping afterwards. How many people have the Winchesters killed, even if it was a host for a demon? Their body count must be up there with the greatest mass murderers of all time!

Castiel ringing on the phone was a nice touch - I had just watched the intro and smugly thought "Oh if Castiel blocked all angels, how is he going to suddenly appear to them? Plot hole!" Again, me of little faith...

Bringing God into the equation - interesting. God is away (on a tortilla! Castiel's response was great as well).

I too expected Dean to say "That's a terrible idea Sammy" at the end. I wonder will each week only focus on one brother? I'm assuming they'll discover they're stronger together but wonder how long it will take and what it might cost them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 169 ✭✭di2772

Loved the way i was confused, but thought they were mistakes, without the demon smoke and then when the wrong eyes were black.

    Really well done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

I'm loving the way this season is going - except for it probably being the last season. It's obviously going to end up as a showdown between God and Lucifer and how do you beat that Possible a showdown through proxies ... Sam and Dean battling it out?

God on a Tortilla was classic Dean :D And I loved the red horse "It's how I'd ride" - brilliant.

Quite a dark episode too but it's brought together a few hunters - Rufus, Jo, Ellen and the boys - for the hunt to end all hunts. Can't wait for next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

I'm convinced I saw somewhere that Kripke planned for a season 5 and 6 (EDIT: http://www.fi-sci.com/tv-news/kripke-season-6-possible).. but it's looking like this might be the last season.

I mean.. they are essentially talking about God Vs Lucifer. You can't really get more epic than that!

Superb episode.. yes, Sam and Dean have had their differences in the past but them parting ways at the end of 5x02 just felt more permanent. Obviously it won't be... but it was nicely done!

Just when you think they've done it all, they pull an episode like that out of the bag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

Yep, I've read those rumors of a season 6 too. TBH, unless the CW goes down in flames, I can't see them letting Supernatural go, especially after what might be its' best ever season. They'll want more but the real question then is if it can be taken in a new direction or if it will just suck. As much as I would like the show to continue on, I don't want it to become the next Smallville... or Scrubs.

But for now, I'm just going to enjoy the awesomeness of season 5 :).

Superb episode. I think all the high points have been mentioned already -- it looks like this season is continuing season 4's high quality.

    Hi All,

    i'm new to the forum.
I just wanted to add that i have to agree: this was an excellent episode.
it was great to see Ellen back. I must say that i missed her over the last 2 seasons and was wondering what she would be up to.
There were some really nice little details in there too - Castiel on the phone, the X-rays etc. i like how the episodes are drawn together like that.
I thought Jared and Jensen did an excellent job in showing the conflicting emotions in the boys at the end too.
this season is really shaping up to be awesome and i can't wait to see how things will progress.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

Crap...they should stop at Season 5...Supernatural is one of the best shows on TV..(i only started watching it about 3 months ago- 82 eps in 2 weeks...it was tough going :D ) and I don't wanna see them ruin by dragging it on.
Look at Smallville...good god it's fcuking brutal.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Having just flown through Season 4, loved the two new episodes. Episode 2 was especially brilliant. I think i'd like this to be the last season as well. What can top this really? Its pretty much the head honcho's of both Heaven and Hell facing off against one another.

Hopefully we'll get to see Jacob and Esau...i mean Lucifer and War on screen toghether :)

It only occurred to me near the end of the episode where I had seen the guy playing "War" before :). I wonder if they'll be poaching any other stray Lost cast members this year?...

Another fantastic episode with a great revelation at the end. Sam is Lucifer's real vessel. So it's Sam versus Dean for the world.

I really liked Dean and Castiel together, there were some really funny moments, especially in the brothel. The face on Cas was priceless.

    Its only getting stronger.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, that was again an excellent episode.

Dean and Castiel were hilarious together (Castiel's ineptitude at pretending to be an FBI agent and especially the brothel scenes were very funny :D) and I liked where they went with the Raphael story too and the seed of doubt that he planted regarding who really raised Castiel. Great payoff of the daddy issues joke from the brothel with Raphael too :).
    tvnutz wrote: »

Excellent stuff there too - Sam's part of the story was strong overall too, but unlike Dean's which had some humor, it was all bleak for him. So now we can clearly see that Sam and Dean are going to be proxies for each side of the conflict though I think Dean may in fact stand in for God in the end, rather than Michael.

Best show on at the moment and by a long shot. I wonder if they will keep all the episodes this season linked in to the main story? It seems like they kind of have to. Though the formula from last week worked pretty well: at its' core, it was a "monster of the week" kind of plot, but nicely tied into the bigger picture.

"Last time you zapped me some place I didn't poo for week... were driving" Legend of a writer the show makes me LOL every week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,110 ✭✭✭Sarn

Again another great episode. It's great that they can keep such consistency. Should've known that Sam would be a vessel. This episode shows that he can't run away from what he is. Better that he stick with Dean to keep him on the straight and narrow.

Cas' awkwardness was funny, nice to see the other side of the angels. I also liked the very literal translation of 'arc'hangel with all the electricity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Redisle

Another brilliant episode.. Sam as a vessel.. the thought had never crossed my mind.. real big shocker moment for the end of the episode. As someone else said defo the best show on tv at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

No-one mentioned Raphael, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Angel. :)

Excellent episode.... Cas looked bloody terrified in the brothel, and the ending was great.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,199 ✭✭✭Shryke

This episode was great. Cas was the funniest part. Sam and Dean are heading for a definite climax. Unless this is extended I don't see how a Season Six could be made. Until then I'm looking forward to more revalation and demon killing climax.

There is only one show that comes close to this in my eyes and that's Breaking Bad, both have kinda dark humour.

Absolute brilliance again and is definately the best show on imo.If it continues on like this,I hope it's the last season and that they don't drag it out and kill it.

I have to disagree with you all - utter cack of the highest order! Rubbish!

Nah, only kidding it was excellent - I just wanted to sound a bit different in my post. Also loved Dean and Castiel team up - Castiel FBI was great, and of course the brothel scene. Nice to see a bit of levity here, as the season has been quite dark.

Sam on the other hand - man he's really in a dark place. The idea of him being the vessel for Lucifer is perfect. It's been building up a long while, but Winchester vs Winchester seems the way the show is heading, in a very big way.

As everyone else has said, that was a brilliant episode. Cas was excellent, as were both the Winchesters. If they can keep this up, its looking like one fantastic season.
