Threw it all in the wash machine but i cant get the muck splashes off my lovely new yellow hi vis rain jacket even after 2 washes its still not great and as for somebody who barely knows how to turn the washing machine on what temperture do most of you guys wash your gear on when its pretty filthy.....I just cannot go out on my 1000.00 euro new bike in dirty cycling gear now could i guys, definitely not cool............Any advice..........

Do you have mudguards? Road-filth is almost impossible to shift from some clothes.

Good, now that your high vis jacket is dirty, bin it! Jesus 1000euro bike with high vis jacket, RAAM and El tonto will hunt you down and burn you!

Jokes aside, i wash them at the lowest possible temperature, which is 30 on my washing machine. If the stains are too hard, i wash them on the hand with this assos washing thingy. Does the job!

    Try some vanish soap.

:(Thanks for the help guys, dont have mudgards i,m afraid cos its a road bike morgan, and astromonty i washed it on a 30 then a 40 degrees but the back of it is still dirty and it was only my first bloody time to wear it... Maybe if i try it on a 60 degrees it might come out clean or melted to a crisp but it has to be clean one way or another,or better still i could just cycle on sunny days which would probably be once or twice a year in this country.................

My rain jacket has been dirty since the first wet ride last year. Been washed a few times, but its never been the same.

Wipe it down with a damp cloth immediately when you get home, seems to work for me.

It's a bloody ordeal cleaning the jacket, shoes, bike and then myself. It adds 20 mins onto hte end of my ride.

Is it your waterproof jacket you are trying to get clean? them things aren't supposed to go in the washing machine as far as i know, ruins their waterproofness.

for other items the vanish does the trick alright.

    Not true.

I regularly wash my heavy winter waterproof (Altura Nevis) and my summer waterproof (Rapha Stowaway). They are still waterproof.

    +1 on vanish.

Rinse the clothing in soapy water to get crud out.
    Add vanish and then wash.

    Should be fine.

I wouldn't say it's not true. It probably depends on the brand. Always check the label :p

The Stowaway isn't properly waterproof, just reasonably water-resistant - certainly my arms got wet through it on the Surf & Turf (an hour of heavy rain at the start) and the Sean Kelly (extended periods of light rain and misty drizzle). You'd be hard put to get a waterproof that packs that small though, and I'm quite happy with it.

Fabric conditioner is your enemy when it comes to delicate fabrics like those on ski jackets and water-resistant raingear. NEVER USE IT. Apparently (a ski instructor once informed me to pass the time in the gondola) fabric softener works by attacking the fibres in clothes to give them a soft, fluffy feel - exactly what you don't want happening to your expensive raingear.
