Gas during treatment.

I have a huge phobia of the dentist (not actually the dentist, but the dental work!), I've needed to get a lot of fillings done lately which I've been very brave and been to every appointment so far and it was extremely hard for me. I have to get a wisdom tooth out thats been causing me lots of bother and I'm sick to my stomach thinking of an extraction. I was offered valium to get while I get it out, but I don't fancy being out of it.
How common is gas used for dental work? would it be something most dental offices have available or only a select few? I've read around here that you can drive shortly after having it done.
Does anyone have any experiences of using this for dental treatment?
