    Hi,

I am wondering if anybody would know how much it would cost to travel from Terenure to the City Centre (lets say Grafton Street) by car everyday in a Ford Mondeo. I am looking for an estimation of the total petrol that would be spent in comparison to getting the bus which is €1.60 per journey.

Anyone good at maths? Please help. :)

    Thanks,

    Laura

Your miles per gallon and time of travel are going to affect any calculation. And it doesn't take in the non-monetary value of not having to watch the car in front of you and instead being able to relax with a book. Then there's parking charges unless you have a space provided.

Tbh you could walk to Grafton St from Terenure quicker than a car sometimes.

If you do get an actual estimate of the petrol cost you should compare it to a 10-journey ticket which is usually discounted - not 1*1.60 individual tickets.

Thanks for your reply. I am basically looking for an estimate of how much petrol i would use. Parking isnt a problem and lets say i would be sitting in the car for approx 35 mins per morning. Would you know at all? :)

Just had a look on google maps and its 3.5 miles. It costs me approximately 16/17 cent per mile (~33 mpg) on petrol, but thats urban/rural combined in a 1.4l focus. Your fuel consumption will be much worse in rush hour urban stop start driving. In my car i would say my mpg in that situation would be 20-25 mpg, but thats just a bit of a guess really. Assuming that fuel consumption it would cost approximately 25c per mile or 87c for your journey into Grafton st.

But as the other poster said driving in traffic is very annoying (and tiring too). Plus the biggest cost by far will be parking, and that's what will make the journey more expensive than buses

Well thats about a 5.5 km journey, most 1.4 to 1.6 litre cars do no worse than 8 ltrs / 100km on their urban cycle... so

    (5.5km / 100km) x 8 ltrs = 0.44 litres ~ 0.5 ltrs.

    0.5 ltrs x €1.16/ltr = €0.58 each way.

You also need to factor in wear and tear on the vehicle.

Of course, instead of taking 35 minutes in the car, you could do it in 10 on a bike, for about €100 per year or less. 12% of people in Terenure are bike commuters - the highest in the country.

Also look at this (note it is from 2006-2007) http://www.aaireland.ie/staging2007/infodesk/cost_of_motoring.asp

and the parking levy if it comes in - at 200 a year, it'll be an extra euro a working day.

True, but the vehicle is depreciating at some horrific rate while parked at home, too. Unless the OP is going to sell it altogether...

The time that you make your journey will have a significant impact on your journey costs, i think you'd be looking at 45 minutes at least travelling between 730-9am, also will be greatly dependent on what part of terenure? if you live the bushy park side heading towards templeogue it can take a long time to get through terenure cross-roads itself, if you live on the side closer to harolds cross you'd fairly fly in.

you mention on your other post living in oldbawn/firhouse so if you were travelling in from there rather than terenure the time/cost would be much higher. i'd get the bus if i were you and depending on your destination the 16/16a to camden street might actually be quicker than getting the 15s (again depending where in terenure, if near the crossroads the 16s are an option). as others have said cost shouldn't be the only factor, stress wise driving will take a bigger toll on you.

If waiting for the bus to actually arrive isn't considered stressful, then yeah.
Just need to get on, pay, and sit down til it's time to get off, driving's somewhat more involved and requires concentration

Um, the area around Terenure has 20+ bus routes - you don't have to wait long for a bus.
