    Hey,
I bought a 2nd hand Netgear router WGR614 v7. The guy that sold it didn't supply a software disc. I went onto www.routerlogin.net (Netgears website) to download it. It came as a .chk file. My acer Windows Vista laptop cannot open or run the file, hence I cannot operate the router!

    Any suggestions people?

You shouldn't need any software to setup a router.

Assuming the default settings are still intact, go to http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox). Username is "admin", password is "password".

If these defaults don't work, reset the router, there should be a little button you can push in with a pen on the back of the router, and try again.

Is there any other way around it?

The reset button is the circular hole next to the antenna. See the label on the base of the router, which also has the default user name and password. This will reset it to the factory settings and its IP address will be 192.168.1.1. You can then type this in the address bar of your browser and log into the router. Once in you can set it up to suit yourself. Change the password. Choose the wireless security type and codes etc.

I'm going to assume your not connected to the router as typing in 'routerlogin.net' would bring your to the routers setup page instead of the Netgear website on a Netgear router.

Reset the router as described above - use a pen on the back of the router
Disconnect from any wireless/wired networks you may be connected to
Connect the router to your Laptop with a LAN cable.
Then in a browser navigate to http://192.168.1.1
From there you can update the firmware you downloaded (if needed)
You can also setup the wireless AP name and security etc.

If this does not work, there could be an issue with the router
