Communications Minister Eamon Ryan TD said:

“Our broadband performance in recent years has been going from strength to strength. >From a position of over 500,000 subscribers to broadband in 2007, there are now over 1.2 million subscribers. The Irish Government is committed to universal availability of broadband, to higher speeds and lower prices for all consumers.

Our plans, however, are about much more than access. We have published ambitious Government plans for next generation networks and for actions to bring digital jobs to Ireland. These plans will be implemented fully and as a matter of urgency.

The smart economy is the platform for Ireland's recovery. Government and the private sector will work together to bring the next wave of digital growth to Ireland."

Only if you include mobile dialup substitutes.

Do tell us what they are please? We'd love to know what these amazing plans contain and please let Comreg know too.

Comreg are still asking us what an NGN actually is.

Comreg recently held a consultation without mentioning the NGN we already have ...and have had for many years now (at least 2002)

Were Ireland is at the moment with all this Boardband, were Way Way down the bottom of the list, Japan have 1gb of speeds England are updating to 100 + and were are we at 24mb not even. sure some parts of Cork cant even get speeds of 7mb never mind 24mb i upgraded from 4mb to 7mb and had to drop back down to 7mb as my line could not take the speed of the data that was being sent..

to get 20mb you would have to go to UPC and with that im sure you wouldnt hit that speed while surfing the net.

Can some one tell me, Cable Boardband with UPC what if some one have NTL down the road and the rest of the house's had a Tap'd Box would that make UPC Broadband slower then what it should be?

By Tap'd Box, do you mean a dodgy box?

No dodgy boxes or the TV service won't have any effect on the broadband. The BB uses it's own channel, independent of TV.

Also BTW the dodgy boxes will likely stop working soon as UPC continues to roll out it's new encryption.

The dodgy boxes only work with some channels now , sports and movies cannot be decrypted any more .

However in a delicious irony a large number of 'clone' 'TheBox' units were introduced to 'the channel' starting late last year .

The clone boxes emit a signal (unlike the real ones) to enable them to be tracked down .

It is very possible that these clone beacon signals interfere with Broadband . It is further possible that NTL does not actively go looking for this signal on cable segments and that they simply leave the clones squawking away .

Most of these clone boxes will be turned off very shortly as the non premium channels are finally encrypted properly thus ending the era of the dodgy box.

Well the whole thing about the new dodgy box is that the firmware can be updated so people can go away and update the firmware on the box to get the new encrypted codes....

As if i remember couple of months ago a Chat room that i normally use was full of people asking for help only to be heard on deaf ears.. untill a couple of days later one guy give out the new codes and what you know.. people have free Sports again.

i dont thing you can really stop people from doing anything were free tv comes into play. Sky changes their viewing cards every 6months. so people that have dodgy viewing cards wont work anymore. and sure evening at that you still can get the new card as a dodgy one as well only way UPC are going to stop that is if they put a Dish on your Wall and the viewing card is in the LNB on the Dish
