Basically, Matched means your bet has been placed (taken by someone), Unmatched means your bet is not actually placed yet (someone has not take the bet/odds offered by you).

When you place a bet on Betfair (i.e., backing the selection), you can choose what odds you want to bet at. So if you place €100 at 2.00, you need someone to lay that selection for it to be matched. If the selection is, let's say, 1.80 pre kick off, then it's unlikely that your bet will be matched and it will remain unmatched and your stake will be returned in that case.

God, that's a terrible explanation but there you go.

so basically, unless somebody disagrees with you, you cant bet?

Well if someone's offering odds of 2.00 and you want to back at odds of 2.00, then there's the bet.

In a way, yes, if i understand you correctly. If Ireland are 1-0 up against South Africa with 10 minutes to go and you want to back Ireland at 10-1 to win you will find it difficult to find someone who disagrees with you, and you won't match your bet.

Op, best way to learn about betfair is use some of their online http://help.betfair.com/index.en.html

Also, open an account, stick in 100 quid and blow it all on 1 euro bets. Play around with backing and laying. Losing a couple of controlled quids is the best learning curve ever. (Only play with what you can afford to loose)
