How to turn down a job offer

I'm in a very lucky position - I'm going through the interview process with one job that looks very good, have a third round interview with the CEO on Friday morning. I also have another job offer which, although it won't pay quite as well, is much better from a lifestyle perspective and I know the team I'd be working with there and they're great craic (professional tho)

So, what do I do? Do I go through with the other interview? How do I turn them down before the interview, or alternatively, how do I turn them down immediately afterwards?

Oh and where I work now, they haven't given me notice that my probation is over yet so according to the contract I only need to give one week's notice. When probation is over I have to give 4 weeks. What should I do there to get minimum notice but not piss too many people off cos you never know when you'll need them?

Ring them ASAP and say you are no longer interested, don't waste their time by pretending to be interested, what is the point in that? If they ask tell them just what you said above you prefer the job for the lifestyle.

Give them as much time as you can afford, treat them as you would like to be treated, If you only need to give 1 week, maybe tell them 2 weeks before and offer to work an extra week (unless you HAVE to start the new job)

In answer to both questions, be professional, don't mess anyone around

in terms of notice i think you should give what the contract states tbh, nobody is really happy when u leave a job but theres nothing they can do about that.. if ur current employer is a genuine one they ll have no probs givin u a reference, otherwise they can be mean if they want to, but that wont have anything to do with ur notice period i think..
you can try offering a 2 weeks period , but be prepared for them sayin no and givin you only 1 week, in which case it might leave you a week out of work

Unless you have signed the contract, you are jobless. They'll drop you in a heartbeat, so be careful...

personally i'd go for lifestyle for my well being.

out of respect for teh company that you have teh interview for but wont be taking then a phone call explaining that you have accepted an offer from soneone else, that you appreciate teh time that they have taken and wish them every success filling teh role etc, you never know when paths will cross again.

in relation to the place you are now, has your probation period ended? if so and they have not told you it has been extended then AFAIK you may be required to give them teh 4 weeks as it may be assumed that you are off probation and rules of permenant employees apply. could be wrong about that though.

if your probabtion isn't up the they are only entitled to one week as per your current contract anything after that is up to you. me i'd tell the new company i can start in two weeks, give the current job one week and take a week off but that's me
