Lifting weights for fat loss for a beginner

Hey guys, just looking for some advice. Apologies if this has been done to death before, I’ve tried having a quick search and I couldn’t see anything.

Okay, I’m looking to get into shape. At the moment I’m around 180 lbs, 5ft 9 with a bit of a beer belly. I’ve started playing football twice a week which is pretty good work out in itself. I’ve also got a gym membership – and this is where I’m really falling down – I don’t have a clue about how to use weights. From what I can gather, free weights are more beneficial than the machines? I asked one of the guys in the gym about this and he told me to just use the machines. There’s like an ‘express’ line in the gym of machines, and he told me to just use these machines in order. This guy was about 19, and I get the distinct impression that he doesn’t have a clue!

So can anyone recommend a good weights program for a beginner? Should I stick to cardio work for a while until I get my weight down before starting? I’ve never really lifted weights before. I’d like to lose the beer belly, and generally become fitter looking. I’m not looking to bulk up or anything like that, but from reading this forum people have mentioned that lifting weights is a good way to lose the bulge.

Obv. my diet is going to be important too. I’m reading through the stickies at the moment, and there seems to be good info in there. Starting this week I’ll have something like this every day: porridge with a banana and honey in the morning, turkey sambo on whole wheat for lunch, and then something like grilled chicken, potatoes and broccoli for dinner.

Thanks in advance for any pointers!
