Publishing: finding work as a copy editor

Doesn't seem to be a PUBLISHING forum at boards.ie so I'm posting this thread under News & Media in the hope that someone might be able to answer it. I'm a trained and qualified copy editor and proofreader and wonder if anyone out there can advise on the best way to find work in the publishing industry. I've been told to avoid publishing companies (go figure!) because they're notoriously bad (non) payers! Seems to be tough to find work in this area. Are there any working/freelance copy editors out there who can please help me? I've tried contacting a few companies but they say their freelance lists are full up.

Many thanks for your help, Linguo. Yes, I was already aware of Cle and am a member of FEPAI. I guess what I'm really hoping for is to find other copy editors on boards.ie who can give me any tips/advice about securing work in the area.
