Despite paying silly money on yearly membership I never spend any money on clubs/gear- I don't actually have any proper waterproofs- just stick up the umbrella :P Any one any suggestions of places to get cheap waterproofs preferably in South dublin.

mcguirks - leopardstown, under main race course stand.
once in the shop, go upstairs
    good selection
    expensive though for decent gear

Elverys in Suffolk St have decent offers on mid-range Kartel waterproofs, they have a shop in Dundrum town centre, not sure if that one does golf gear as never been in it.

there are a lot of deals on in golf club pro shops at the mo,although i don't like mcguirks they do have an ok sale on at the mo,it is very important i think to get a good quality rain suit, don't buy a cheap one, sunderland or ping for me

if your not into brand names and just want to keep dry (like me) then go to a heatons store which has a sports direct department. I got a short sleeved waterproof top for €13 and 2 piece waterproofs for €20.

    Hi

try any of the on line sites from the UK..
Always seem to have great deals on wet gear

    www.direct-golf.co.uk
    www.onlinegolf.co.uk

Worth looking at , have bought stuff from both before and fast shipping

i'm not convinced that heatons best are going to keep the rain at bay,in fact i'll guarantee you they won't,stear clear i say

My advice, either keep using the umbrella and accept that you will get wet or wont play OR buy the best raingear.
Anything in the middle is a waste of money as you will still get wet (either through leaks or sweat).

Cheap waterproofs are a waste of money imo, any waterproof clothing with out gortex is useless.
If needs be save up and buy the better gear it'll do exactly what it's supposed to do and you'll have them for at least 5 years.

Try the golf warehouse in Cherry Orchard Ind Est. He is cheap for most kit.

Bought cheap waterproofs in the past. Waste of money and waterproof is a contradiction in terms. Saving up for a set of Galvin Greens, by all accounts and I have spoken to a few people about them there is nothing better. Saucy though > €450

Definitely don't buy cheap gear, they won't last and you'll end up paying out for more stuff. I recently bought a Proquip Ultralite rain jacket and trousers in Halpennys for €160, I think they were down from 250 to 169 but I got a few more quid off them. I have used them loads of times for golfing, walking and they even kept me dry on the Hill last Sunday at the match when everyone around was getting lashed out of it. The jacket has detachable half sleeves which is very handy when playing when it is warm and the jacket acts as a wind cheater as well.

I wanted something for around 150, tried the Kartel on in Elverys but to be honest they didn't feel anywhere as comfortable as the Proquip, never mind trying to swing clubs with them.

I know I'm going to have these for years so they are a great purchase.

As for buying Galvin Green, go for it if you have the money but to be honest it's an awful lot of money when you could get good wet gear for a third of that and still have enough money for clubs, balls etc. If I was to spend a bit more then the Sunderland gear seemed fab.

Anyway, just my tuppence worth

Cheap wet gear is as useful as a used johnny. Goretex may be expensive but its worth every cent.

Hmm €450 not sure I could justify that that is more then I have ever spent on clubs combined  Was hoping there was something out there less then €100? I only really play in the summer and my golf season is coming to a close shortly.

Less then a €100? Bit of a waste of time reading this whole tread! Have you not heard a word the boys have been saying?

Both less than 100 and I assume relatively decent - you'd want to be playing a hell of alot of golf to spend 450 on wet gear

I got one a few weeks back, ain't played golf in it in torrential rain yet, but did walk the dog in a complete downpour. I thought it stood up to the task pretty well.

I've got Nike wet gear similar to these and i play a lot of golf so they've got plenty of use and i find them excellent.450 euro for wet gear is ridiculous imho.

Most of the cheaper (but not cheap) wetgear, like the cheaper shoes, are fine for a year and then turn to crap. I went through the phase of buying new wetgear on a semi-yearly basis but have since bought a GG GoreTex top and Callaway GoreTex bottoms and havent looked back. Two years old and going stronger than ever.

Same with the shoes, there is no point in having great wetgear and wet feet. Ecco GoreTex shoes for me and never a damp sock to be seen. At this time of year even on the nicest morning the grass is soaked.

    i haven't got wet yet!!

But then again if a right heavy shower comes i'll stand in with unbrella rather than stay out in it!

Disqualification...you cant shelter from rain in a competition (non matchplay)

I presume you mean you cannot Shelter when playing a shot/putting? Obviously when waiting to hit, walking to ball etc you shelter under your umbrella.
I have a cheap enough pair of shoes and have a few years out of them, my clubs were €200 second hand, bag was cheap enough. I am a member of one of harder to get into courses in Dublin so Yearly fee is steep but only really play in the summer. I am an average golfer and only really play weekly during the summer as play other sports during the winter so find it very hard to justify €450 on some wet gear when I have managed to get by with windsheeter and umbrella up to now :)

You cant stop playing to avoid the rain. You cant delay or huddle under a tree to let the rain pass over. You must continue to play.

So am I the only one here that bought the "Backswing" waterproofs in Penneys, €13 I think they were??

I've Footjoy AQL's that keep the water off my feet, a waterproof jacket I had myself and the waterproofs from Penneys.

I genuinely thought that the €200+ price tags I saw on waterproof gear in McGuirks was some kind of mass pricing error. :o
