I'm hoping to record some rapping so I don't need anything very elaborate with loads of inputs. I was just wondering is this bog standard M-Audio one up to the task or do I need to go with one of the more expensive ones?

I was told that brand is probably the best option in that price range, but I'd be open to suggestions.

A friend of mine is loaning me a SM58 mic so I think that's all I'll need to get cracking? I'll 'acquire' any software that's necessary.

That m-audio box should do the trick. I use a tascam US-122L which is also an entry level interface and I'm really happy with it. I also got a good deal on it on ebay.
